Promote 3-4 prompts (not yours or your recipient’s, according to plausible deniability, you just think it would be cool if they got filled).

Also nice LOTR filler text.

I’m predicting here that Guardian is going the most popular fandom in the collection this year. I wish I was into it, but I’m not...

The Spider-Verse fic is still the only one I really want to read, based on fandom and characters ... where are the people writing for fandoms that I am interested in???

I'm REALLY excited for the stardew valley fic -- my first playthrough was Abigail/female farmer, and it's definitely a bit of a rare pair

Coalie Catch-up

Because I have a dumb question for somebody from the last post

Re: Coalie Catch-up

(Anonymous) 2019-11-17 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Coalie asking for a hard separation of A/B/O, am I correct you’re thinking of “abo” as a slur for aboriginal people? I’m most familiar with “abo” outside of fandom referring to prison abolition activists as a self-identifier (I have a shirt that reads “ABO COMIX” which I got supporting a prisoner-organized and created abolitionist zine anthology, and being in the US have only ever encountered the “abo” label in that context IRL). I googled but I’m case that isn’t the usage you meant, I’d like to confirm your meaning of the context, if you’re up for it and you don’t mind clarifying.

Not that coalie, but yes, it’s a slur against aboriginal people in Australia(+NZ?).

I'm not sure about that. The fandom was at its height last Yuletide, and it still wasn't the biggest one then.

I'm personally placing bets on The Untamed or Gideon of the Ninth this year.

DC

I'm also betting on The Untamed - especially since Guardian was kind of a gateway fandom and a lot of the people who got into it last year are now into Cnovels and their adaptations in general, and anything connected to MXTX is king there.

Thank you! I may talk to my local abolitionists about the possibility of shifting to “abol” or considering other alternatives. I just wanted to be sure there wasn’t another case I should be aware of in my attempts to be a less-clueless US American.

What kind of weird? I presume you don’t mean like, weird pairings so much as circumstances or kinks, yes?

(The answer to your question is me though, I always like weird porn.)

Guardian's grown a lot since last Yuletide, but I'm still betting on MDZS being bigger.

anyone contemplating defaulting?

On this note, I feel a little ridiculous for asking, since clearly they are all the rage in fandom right now, but apparently I wasn't paying attention when it happened and Google has turned out to be completely 100% useless: What exactly is a Cnovel? The closest I have come to determining the definition is "Chinese romance novel" or "Chinese web novel" but maybe I am completely off?

Anyone willing to take mercy on a clueless coalie?

Re: What’s posted already?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-17 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Chinese web novel, yes. The ones popular on the exchange circuit/in fandom in general are the M/M romance ones. (Likewise, cdrama is Chinese drama.)

Re: What’s posted already?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-17 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just a chinese online novel, generally referring to the ones posted to various Chinese forums online--some examples of this would be Guardian, written by priest, or The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System or Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.

Re: What’s posted already?

(Anonymous) 2019-11-17 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Chinese web novels. The most popular one in English-speaking fandom spaces is Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, which is danmei, the Chinese equivalent of BL, and what The Untamed is based on. (The Untamed is not BL, because of censorship laws.). Guardian was also based on a BL novel.

All translations of the novels are fanmade and thus vary widely in quality, but there are a lot being translated.
