It was the Coal of Times

It was the best of assignments, it was the worst of assignments, it was the age of gaming your offers, it was the age of forgetting to remove that one fandom from your offers, it was the epoch of treat writing, it was the epoch of apocapinch-hits, it was the season of fics of your dreams, it was the season of explicit DNW spitefic, it was the spring of hope that the anon in the comment above is writing for you, it was the winter of ars_belli is your author.

Crossed your fingers and hoped you didn't get that one letter, and it worked? Letters or requests revealed since you got your assignment that made your hair stand on end for what might have been?

Known wanker posted late letter. I'd pulled that fandom from my offers at the last minute. \o/

I could have matched to someone whose letter was wanked about on the previous post. I thought about unoffering, but figured that in this case I would've been okay with an ODAO. Not only did I not match to them, but I matched to a different person on the same fandom, with my dream prompts.

A new letter showed up for one of my fandoms on the last day of sign ups and I didn't see it until sign ups closed. Recip asked for "any", but only talked about a handful of characters in their letter. The characters they talked about are not characters I offered. In addition, their general likes were all geared toward a type of fic they specifically said they didn't want for this fandom, so I had very little to work with. I spent some time yesterday trying to come up with fic ideas I could feasibly write if I matched to them.

I did match on that fandom. I matched with an early letter that had actually convinced me to offer this fandom in the first place. I am super relieved.

The worst letter I could have matched to might not even have been that bad, I just couldn't read any of it, since it was entirely in lowercase, except for the bits that were in CAPSLOCK.

I could possibly have matched to an anti on one fandom, but didn't. Phew!

= Misspelled one of the characters in the pairing (and the requester knew they misspelled it, yet didn't care enough to look it up).

= "Any" request, one single prompt, no other likes

= Request makes it clear they really really really want smut with a single throw-away out for non-smutty stuff.

I used to think people were gaming too hard when they avoided any fandom without public letters, but now I'm starting to think that I was the optimistic fool.
