Seriously, though, what’s a hippo?

someone who acts as go-between when you're trying to find a beta reader without giving away your name and who you're writing for

To clarify: if you want to find a beta for an exchange fic, you PM a hippo (person with the 'hippo' role, name in red) on the Yuletide discord with the details: fandom, story length, rating, any warnings or issues, and the recipient name (so the recip won't end up offering). The hippo will 'dance', i.e. get the attention of the Yuletide channel, and ask for volunteers to PM them. Then the hippo will hook you up.

If nobody volunteers there's a hippo-want-ads channel which people are reminded periodically to check.

There is also a beta spreadsheet which knepveu puts together (info is on the Yuletide collection and DW/LJ comms) which I have personally found to be a better resource for finding beta readers.

On the other hand, I'm wondering, what's a tenderfoot?

(Probably not a hobbit nickname for humans.)

Old-fashioned slang for "n00b" basically. Dates back to dude ranches in the US west.
