What do you even do when one of your recip's DNWs is literally the plot of the canon you matched on???

Ask through the mods? I've only had someone DNW one third of the plot before, which meant I chose to write fic about the characters they wanted that didn't have anything to do with that plotline for fear of accidentally mentioning something, but if it's the entire plot, that's a bit WTF.

If it was something like they picked Battle Royale but DNW child death, I would write post-canon fic about the kids that escaped at the end that was future facing and only vaguely/implicitly referenced the events of canon. Can you do that?

It is very much like that! And yeah, I guess I can, but in this case it's sort of a disappointment. :( A slightly better but still imperfect comparison would be requesting Flowers In The Attic but DNW incest. I shipped that, recip. >:(

I'd ask through the mods in case they just copied and paste the DNWs list and it slipped their mind that it would conflict with that canon.

I did request a canon one year where the main plot is driven by a trope I generally hate and I just wanted a fic that didn't have the characters meditating/angsting about the stupid plot device.

It could be an oversight on the recip's part or it could be that they tolerated the hated thing for the duration of that canon and no further.

You may have to check through the mods to figure out how to handle the specifics, but basically, don't just regurgitate canon, write about those characters doing something that doesn't involve the DNWed plot for at least a thousand words.

Have been there before. Ask through the mods, nonny. Odds are good that they didn't think through how the canon would interact with the DNW.
