Luck of the draw, for sure. I think a lot of the meh gifts are the ones from people who didn't pick up the canon fresh (and in fairness to them, a lot of these canons aren't super easy to pick up), but are in that spot where they maybe saw it once so they kind of know it well enough to write it, so they do. But they don't necessarily feel strongly about any of it and the result is kind of bland.
