I guess the context, for everyone not on Discord, that this was posted by metaphasia.

It looks like they wrote 2 stories for Yuletide (one where the recip has not commented yet, and one where the recip has left a placeholder).

They got a YT gift that was exactly 1,000 words, to which metaphasia left this comment:

Thank you so much for the story! You really managed to capture Casey's perfectionist vibes at making sure things turn out well. I was impressed with how intentionally written the story felt. The restraint and rounds of revisions it must have taken to get the word count exactly right and to manage to elide around conversations without actually including any dialogue tags clearly involved a lot of work.

Man, this is the kind of comment I aspire to give in situations like that but probably wouldn't be able to manage. Hats off to the recip, though it sucks that they had such a miserable Yuletide.

OP - hahaha this was exactly my line of thinking so thank you for at least affirming me here!

IDK if the fic they got was actually bad or not but between this and their flounce in the server I’m thinking good riddance.

Yeah, I'd say something bland like "Thank you! I liked the way you wrote Casey." and then quietly rejected the fic two weeks later because I'm too non-confrontational.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-01 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Rec lists would be better if people were actually unafraid to be picky about what they liked enough to rec to others.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-01 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's tough in the anon period when if you're selective you are quite likely to end up reccing every fic in a fandom except the one your bestie wrote, though :(

It was slightly easier when there was a much bigger rec'ing culture so people were less likely to get upset at that, and when exchange culture was less of a closed system.

placeholder comments

i got placeholder comments on both my main assignment and one of my treats. now that author reveals are out, idk if i should reply to them now or wait to see if they actually do come back to leave longer comments (both comments were a little more than just "i'll be back later" so there is technically something in the comment to be thanked, but not by much)

(Anonymous) 2025-01-01 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
yep did it in a locked discord instead of coal this year though!

Reply even if it's just "thanks for letting me know you'll be back later", it'll remind them you're still there and waiting.

Pretty much every fic I commented on turned out to be by someone I’d never heard of, but one fic was by a BNF I remember from 25+ years ago who I didn’t realize still does Yuletide (but nothing else), so that was a nice surprise.

Which BNF was it?

On one hand I do feel there is a major issue with how utterly plotless the fic is. The story could have ended after the third section instead of the fourth and not felt any more or less complete than it does now. That is a problem, because it means the fic clears the Yuletide "must be a complete story" rule only by the technicality of not having a plot or arc which could possibly be incomplete to begin with. The author can clearly do better (including writing dialogue), and if a friend of mine published a fic like this, I'd be a little disappointed that they were content to post a total dud.

OTOH, the snide sarcasm about all the hard work that went into making the wordcount exactly right and so on and so forth is OTT and offputting, and the flouce and rant about quitting Yuletide is either very self-absorbed, calculated to bring negative attention to the creator of their gift, or both.

Just reject the gift and bitch about how terrible it is on coal like the rest of us.

it's not bad. it reads intentionally written and lack of dialogue tags never made a fic bad

(Anonymous) 2025-01-01 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's a lot easier to get away with in Yuletide because there's so MUCH fic. I guess if you're in a Yuletide-sized fandom with other people you know who also participated, that's a little harder, but that doesn't really describe most people's Yuletide experience.

Even if the fic was bad, maybe their writer was dealing with something. Shit happens and if one bare minimum fic is enough to ruin an exchange for you forever, you probably shouldn't do exchanges.

RivkaT (BNF definitions may vary, but I was young in X-Files fandom when she and MustangSally were posting Iolokus so that’s my association)

I have twenty years of adding people to social media because we like the same yuletide stuff (and getting into yuletide stuff because people I know on social media post about it, and getting people I know on social media into my yuletide stuff) and I promo my noms pretty hard among my circle, and I know a lot of my circle are also looking the five minute/yt-only stuff like the songfic, so there's a pretty good chance I know at least one other person who might have offered most of what I read and is reading my recs posts. The kind of people who are posting long recs lists to the comms/Discords are probably even more likely to have that kind of overlap.
