There are a couple requests for Her Voice is a Backwards Record by Ozy Brennan, which is a sci-fi novella with an f/f couple. Both requesters want f/f.

Then, maybe obviously, there's This Is How You Lose the Time War, also sci-fi, also f/f.

Unless it is necessary to characterisation that the characters behave in bigoted ways, nothing is lost by simply having them not be bigots and making no reference to this change.

Okay, that makes sense. I just didn't understand the "for that same reason" part because nothing in my comment (the one they replied to) suggested anything like that.

Work around it as much as possible. Avoid what's bothering you most now. Don't do an AU and don't address it directly in the story - the latter especially can turn into poorly-landing issuefic.

If you do write an author's note, keep it very short and run it past a beta reader. You don't want it to sound like a weird apology for being in the fandom while... also being in the fandom, and you don't want to shame your author, and you don't want to sound like you're defending the fandom, and those are difficult lines to walk.

Sympathy! Earlier this year I matched on a fun older fantasy series that I remembered for being joyful wish-fulfilment stuff. I had completely forgotten the protagonist-centered morality and that our "heroes" sometimes went on entire fucking lectures about enslaved sapient creatures were better off in slavery and they proved this by not trying hard enough to escape. These were topics that were easy to avoid in the fic, but I did not enjoy my review.

I understood your argument. I just don't agree with it.

Then we are indeed in agreement! Sorry for being a bit argumentative - I thought you and the coalie below were the same person.

I mean it is factually true lol it doesn't matter if you agree.

Potential tie-breaker factors:

- Does this person already have one or more treats from other people?
- Is their main gift in the same fandom as my treat or no?
- What about last year, did they get treats then? Have they ever got treats in past years?
- Does the fic they got last year look like it was coal?
- Do they reliably comment on their gifts?
- IDK just vibes I guess (whose request was too longwinded or too sparse or just right, is anybody's letter posted in a particularly annoying format, do they seem like they're stuck in 2004 in the bad way or conversely a whippersnapper who should get off my lawn, do I have an irrational dislike of their user icon or share their ships in other fandoms or whatever else)

the reason ODAO is a rule is because you're writing for your recip *and* the collection

This part is not, in fact, factually true. That's not why ODAO exists.

Re: Why isn't Yuletide growing?

(Anonymous) 2024-10-28 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It is factually true that you are writing for the recip and the collection by virtue of doing Yuletide and it is also factually true that in this context Yuletide has an ODAO rule. Thus, an empty signup is permissible.

I feel like competing and overlapping exchanges definitely make sense as a part of the story there. People are going to have less time to write Yuletide treats if they're spending part of the writing period working on assigned fics for other exchanges instead. (And probably there's some degree of overlap between prolific treat-writers and people who like to sign up for all the things and/or are getting more burned out from doing so all year round.)

Lol what. Proper use of "any" and "DNWs" is not something people on meme invented, it's literally part of the official Yuletide rules and the mods talk about it at great length every year ... and yet plenty of Yuletide regulars still can't figure out how to write DNWs that don't contradict their requests.

If you are one of those people, then yes, my comment was directed specifically at you.

It's like, it's the kind of thing where a character's major character note is "they say racist shit but they're not *really* racist so we all laugh." They aren't racist other than that and it has no bearing on their character arc so you could have them say other kinds of awkward conversation enders and change nothing else. But it would still be a really noticeable change if that character played any major role, you know? (And there's enough similar stuff it would be more than just leaving out one optional character.)

I am leaning toward just quietly write it out, though. If recip complains it's not racist enough to be IC I'll let coal handle it.

meme will wank about whether the sky is blue, though. "meme just had a massive wank about X thing" means very little about X thing.

Yeah, write that out. If they complain they'll be telling on themselves, but it's very likely they don't want that content (and imo decently likely they don't remember that humor and wouldn't want it if they did).

*sad fistbump of solidarity*

My main worry re: the author's note or something is I know some people will read my yuletide fic fandom-blind when subscription notifs go out after reveals, and it's real easy to find canon online and I don't want them to step in it unwarned. But yeah I really don't know what I'd even say.

These rules are very much written though:
https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2024/profile#rules

I'm not really talking about whether to use bullet points in your letter but about at least simply following mod instructions. And the percentage of people who don't manage to do that is definitely higher in Yuletide than in other exchanges.

Those numbers seem odd. We definitely didn't have a "madness" collection the first couple years, and for a couple years after that all treats went in the "stocking stuffers". Did they just import anything under 1000 words into Madness and leave the rest main collection?

Really interesting if treats have been hovering around 40% ever since the AO3 move though!
