That is definitely a case of Seinfield Is Unfunny (to quote the TV Tropes thing). If you've consumed literally any superhero media in the past few decades you've indirectly come into contact with Watchmen. It's probably not THE first superhero comic to go all "But what if the superheroes were kinda fucked up and also embroiled in political shit?", but it was a well-done deconstruction of the Golden Age superhero genre that ushered in a new and different wave of superhero media.

It's no longer a big and active fic fandom (its heyday was in the LJ years I'd say), but it was super iconic and influential on the genre. It was one of those "If you only read one superhero graphic novel, make it this one" recurring recs. 95% of grimdark and gritty superhero media in past years is either trying (and usually failing) to copy the same vibes or engaging with it in some other way.

It's also just a really good narrative (and, at the end of the day, one with an ultimately hopeful theme and message, which makes me all the more annoyed by the horse of grimdark copycats that just don't get it that WATCHMEN BASICALLY TELLS YOU that spoilername character was wrong! People are good actually! The final pages of the comic could not be more blunt about this message, and YET.)

/nonny who loves Watchmen and has an axe to grind

I'm honestly just not that invested in the 'receiving a gift' part compared to writing my own fics to other people's prompts. If I turn out to get an actually good gift in exchange, sweet, bonus! If I get something clunky and not-so-great, no big deal. I didn't have a lot riding on hoping to receive the fic of my dreams in the first place, so I basically just wanted exactly what I got, something new to read in a fandom where fic is so scarce that the bar is pretty much 'Is this relatively coherent, about the characters I actually care about and not some unholy blend of my top three least favourite tropes ever in a trenchcoat?' I'll happily write the author a nice comment for their efforts and neither angst nor rage about it not loving it better because I didn't necessarily go in actually expecting to.

anyone writing for Holiday Wishes?

Did you actually read any of the fics they wrote? Their Yuletide fic in particular was basically a fuck you to the recip.

You've *never* heard of it? You weren't here for all of the wank that happened last year? It's also been a Yuletide fandom for years. I'm calling BS on this.

Seems perfectly plausible tbh

Sorry, coalie. It’s never fun.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-19 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
not really. the honest truth is, these events are a bunch of amateur writers doing a fun hobby, not professional writers competing for a prize. that means you're going to get a mixed bag when it comes to skills. some people really do have the talent to write something dazzling in a short timeframe. some decidedly will flop. most will be mediocre.

i don't mind if my gift isn't pro level writing, as long as they obviously made a good effort to create something i'll enjoy. i would hope that it be readable in terms of spag, etc. though.

Not everyone is into comics or superheroes. And yes Watchmen is a superhero comic.

thought of doing this, but i ended up deciding to do fandomtrees instead.

It's juuust old enough that a lot of younger generation of fans wouldn't have heard of it or would only know it through memes. The live action adaptation is fifteen years old. The other one isn't really an adaptation.

they had me until "I don't mean they could have been better with more practice or with a beta - I mean, they just didn't have the talent to be an author to begin with. There's still an inborn, natural knack you have to have,"

this is me too

(Anonymous) 2024-11-20 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
can confirm this doesn't happen

i see what you mean there; coalie is probably exaggerating, though tbf there are some ppl who are just not good at writing, or at writing in certain ways. frex, there is one participant who i'd call an overall decent writer, and i actually like getting ow from them as they are pretty good at original writing and come up with some fresh concepts and ideas and some really exciting plots, whether gen or ship. but when they try their hand at writing fanfic, it's plain to see they struggle with character voice if they are writing someone else's creations. their fandom characters end up sounding like ocs or like flanderized versions of themselves.

hard same, and i thought that at least would be standard for all exchanges.

but then came the day when i was gifted a karrenia_rune fic. oy.

I think it’s obvious that talent exists and some people have more of it than others. But the idea that you can lack it to the extent that improvement is forever impossible is questionable, and the idea that someone could distinguish such a hopeless case from a less fatal talent deficiency just by reading a few of the author’s works is ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2024-11-20 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
yeah agree. the short timeframe is a big piece

personally i think improvement as a writer is possible, but some people have got further to go than others.

Got about 600 words down. Who knows how long it will end up being...

It's weird but I actually miss the inefficient flood of emails in my inbox for pinch hits. I guess at least it was harder to miss. Yet it's so much easier to see what's available right away, so you'd think this would be nicer. Maybe I just like what I can't have best.

anyway, [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits, new batch here
