coaltide | Morbane's coal

In quantum wankchanics, Morbane's coal is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, of quantum wankerposition. In the thought experiment, a hypothetical gift may be considered simultaneously both the fic of your dreams (TFOYD) and coal, while it is unread state, as a result of its fate being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur.

The Coaltide interpretation implies that, after a while, the gift is simultaneously TFOYD and coal. Yet, when a coalie clicks on their gift, the coalie sees the gift either TFOYD or coal, not both TFOYD and coal. This poses the question of when exactly quantum wankerposition ends and reality resolves into one possibility or the other.

For example the most kudosed fic in the collection is the OPLA fic at 14%, further down the front page the dungeons and dragons fic is at 28%

14%. I consider anything over 10 to be a resounding success.

35%, which is higher than my usual 10-20% because Yuletide is generous for feedback in general

Was feeling kind of down about my fic but KHR is apparently holding strong at 30% woo

26%. It was 100% for a while before author reveals, because it had precisely two hits and two kudos, LOL.

My favorite is when the second person slips in a kudos before the hit count updates so you have 2 kudos/1 hit and you briefly become GOD KING OF AO3.

20% — which seems to be smack in the middle for this fandom this yuletide. The runaway “success” fic that’s been rec’d a lot has about 30%.

Hovered around 12% during the anon period but shot up to 20% after reveals. It's not the kind of fandom the reccers read, and the people in the fandom tag are very suspicious of anon fic. The other fic in the fandom had a higher kudos ratio, but I had more comments, so it felt about even.

Rounded, 12% and 17%. One is a tiny fandom even for YT (my recip guessed it was me since I hadn’t kudosed it), so it makes sense it hasn’t had much attention (hits numbers, I mean, not ratio), but the other has been requested in YT a few times and still not many hits. :( But it’s often requested as a kinky thing and mine is gen, so I guess that makes sense.

Mine were anything from 15% (fairly popular fandom) - 40% (small fandom but well-liked story), with an average of 25%.

15%, mid 20s kudos and mid 100s hits. Taking comfort from the fact that I think several people including the recipient have been rereading it.

(I also know I’ve artificially inflated other people’s stats by writing recs, clicking back in again because I forgot the full title, clicking back in again to look at the names in the kudos, etc., so I think this is a time of year when ratios can be fuzzy esp with such small numbers)

24% on both fics, oddly enough, even though they are in different genres and under different pen names. One had far more hits & comments due to being a "Yuletide nostalgia" fandom, but the percentage is the same.

14%, 18%, 15%. Fandoms range from tiny old book fandom to recent blockbuster movie, and yet they're all in about the same range.

27%! I’m super happy with the engagement this year. Normally I get matched on very small fandoms (I do get a few comments and kudos aside from the recip, but usually much later and not during the Yuletide period), and this year my fandom wasn’t large either. But it’s a 5min canon so maybe that helped me out.

20%; mine dropped after reveals. I suspect some of my subscribers clicked on it today and realized it really wasn't my usual sort of thing and clicked out.
