Morbane's coal

In quantum wankchanics, Morbane's coal is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, of quantum wankerposition. In the thought experiment, a hypothetical gift may be considered simultaneously both the fic of your dreams (TFOYD) and coal, while it is unread state, as a result of its fate being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur.

The Coaltide interpretation implies that, after a while, the gift is simultaneously TFOYD and coal. Yet, when a coalie clicks on their gift, the coalie sees the gift either TFOYD or coal, not both TFOYD and coal. This poses the question of when exactly quantum wankerposition ends and reality resolves into one possibility or the other.

It feels vaguely humiliating to have fewer than 50 hits. No one but me is gonna notice, but I notice it a lot.

If it makes you feel better, I have a fic with less than 15 hits.

I've been at 8 hits since Monday afternoon, and don't think that's going to change, so. Humiliating, you say?

I have 6 hits and that annoys me. I wrote in a new-to-AO3 fandom that is very obscure and I was expecting 1 hit, 1 kudos, 1 comment (all from the recipient) so now the ratio doesn't look as good.

Aww, I'm sorry you lost that perfect line of 1-1-1! It is indeed very pleasing.

70% of the collection has less than 50 hits, so I don't think that's anything to be ashamed of.

And in Yuletide the number of hits depends almost entirely on the fandom anyway (with a slight carveout for if your recip has a big social media following and rec'd it), not on what you wrote.

OP

I know, I'm making the mistake of comparing. The leader in the fandom has over 1k and I've written for bigger fandoms in the past few years, so I'm mostly whining.

DC

Did they redate theirs to the 25th and you didn't? I've seen that make a massive difference in big-for-Yuletide fandoms that are active outside of the exchange, since the redated fics go out to everyone who's following the tag and appear at the top of the fandom section, while the non-redated ones appear back at their original date where they're buried under more recent fics and only get seen by people specifically browsing Yuletide.

This is 100% the case in both the fandoms where there's that kind of spread (the top fic has 1000+ hits, the bottom couple have sub-50), so, yeah, redating definitely is effecting things it seems.

You nailed it, good call. I'll have to redate at the end of the anon period.

Yeah, I learned this one the hard way a couple of years ago when I wrote multiple treats in a fandom that was just on the cusp of getting too big for Yuletide where almost everyone else redated theirs. I'm not usually super hung up on comparing stats, but was pretty demoralising having every single one of them sitting right at the bottom of the list hits/kudos/comment-wise, miles behind even some pretty bad fics with terrible SPaG.

It's Yuletide, though. The fic I wrote last year still only has 75 hits. This is totally normal and you shouldn't feel bad about it!
