Morbane's coal

In quantum wankchanics, Morbane's coal is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, of quantum wankerposition. In the thought experiment, a hypothetical gift may be considered simultaneously both the fic of your dreams (TFOYD) and coal, while it is unread state, as a result of its fate being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur.

The Coaltide interpretation implies that, after a while, the gift is simultaneously TFOYD and coal. Yet, when a coalie clicks on their gift, the coalie sees the gift either TFOYD or coal, not both TFOYD and coal. This poses the question of when exactly quantum wankerposition ends and reality resolves into one possibility or the other.

Is it just me or is the exchange feeling kind of dead this year? I know I personally have barely been able to comment or even read since reveals because I’ve had family staying with me ALL WEEK, and I’m assuming that maybe now the Yuletide population is older everyone is in the same boat. Alas for the days of winter break and getting to read fic all day…

I've gotten about as many comments/kudos as I expected on my fics based on what fandoms they were in, tbh.

I don't read fic so I don't have much to say 🤷‍♀️

Same here. I just don't have the time to hole myself up with my laptop and read Yuletide fics for two days straight like I did in 2005. Adulting sucks.

I had to work today and yesterday so I haven't been able to comment as much as I wanted to, but I'm going to leave more comments tonight and finish putting together my rec list. I've gotten a couple of nice comments, so I'm satisfied. The only thing I wish is that the anon memes would talk more about the fic they like/don't like instead of whatever everyone has been bickering about. (I'm sure the monkey's paw will get me on that one.)

Frankly, I wouldn't talk about fic I like on an anon meme because I don't want the trolls to latch onto it. And I wouldn't throw a fic I don't like to the wolves unless I really hated it.

This year, I really loved my gifts and the few other fics I read were all okay to good. I'll talk about that in namespace when I get around to it, but not here.

The 3T1L thread have been pretty good not devolving into trolling this post. Might not last.

People always say this, but then do you just never talk about the stuff you actually like? Like, yes, I know this is coal and we're all grumps here, but there are rec threads too, and I know they've gotten more discussion in years past. I've recced several things I've enjoyed so far; I wish there were more people doing that.

I got promoted this year (yay!) and it's been okay but so exhausting that I've reached a holiday point and my brain just wants to stop. Plus I've commented on fewer fics this year overall so my comment skills feel like a muscle that has atrophied.

I am making myself a count of stories that I have commented on besides my gift (currently it is at 3, lolsob) and I am Going To Increase That Count. Even if I have to log out of my account known for Good Commenting and just leave an anon comment saying "I liked this a lot, great job".

I have all the open tabs in the world.

I believe, nonny!!! Maybe I should make a no pressure comment sock too...

Speaking of the actual exchange. This is an Emelan story I read and thought "but why" - the recipient had zero details at all, and the author wrote a story in which a canonical major victory ACTUALLY means a downer consequence for a minor character, which ends utterly unresolved.

However! Looks like that was perfect and exactly what the recipient secretly wanted! A Yuletide miracle.

Looking at the recipient’s fic, they seem to write profile, a decent amount of the fic they’ve written for Tamora Pierce canons seems on the grimmer side. The treat-writer might know them from the fandom, or have guessed their tastes from what they write (obviously people don’t always want to read the kind of thing they write, but if they have a blank sign-up, it’s a reasonable place to try to get ideas of what they like).

Tonight I'm finally committing to sitting down and starting to go through the full collection and leaving some comments. Not sure how many I'll get through because Christmas has worn me out this year, but slow progress is still progress!

Still waiting on a few recip comments on the fics I wrote. Trying to be patient because almost everything I wrote was over 5k and people are busy, but I'm excited to see what they thought!

Coal troll has exhausted me this year. I didn't sign back onto coal until this morning and IRL has kept me out of most public spaces too. I really miss active 3T1L or in decent faith discussion posts on meme but like coalie above it just feels like The Danger Zone right now. I'm gonna try to put more comments, fic and meme, in leading up to the weekend but whew. Adulting (and I'm in the middle of the adult sandwich age group, with no kids) is Hard.

I made a reccing game below that might get some talk going? But I'd also like to see more people throwing fics in the 3T1L thread.

I have been traveling, dealing with linked RL crises, and sleeping off the crises for the last three days; I think I've read one yt fic other than my gift so far.

(but also tbh I'm actually happily nestled in a megafandom for once and haven't been feeling like other fic anyway. Except my gift, which was good!)

I keep logging into fic and then backspacing, dunno if that’s a larger YT thing or just me. So much fic feels like exchange fic by the numbers.

Most of the fic I’ve read and enjoyed has had like one or two comments—-it does seem slow.

It felt that way for me, too, but then I checked the collection sorted by comments to see if it really was that bad overall and the first page of works all have 20+ comments. So clearly people are commenting, just not on the fandoms we're into.

Is the One Piece stuff swamping everything?

For me, I'm being more active in Yuletide than I have in years. For the last few years, I couldn't get myself to read beyond on my own gift, and I definitely wasn't commenting on anything else. Not that I've done a ton of reading or commenting, but I've done more than I have in a while. I forgot how much this aspect is.
