Morbane's coal

In quantum wankchanics, Morbane's coal is a thought experiment, sometimes described as a paradox, of quantum wankerposition. In the thought experiment, a hypothetical gift may be considered simultaneously both the fic of your dreams (TFOYD) and coal, while it is unread state, as a result of its fate being linked to a random subatomic event that may or may not occur.

The Coaltide interpretation implies that, after a while, the gift is simultaneously TFOYD and coal. Yet, when a coalie clicks on their gift, the coalie sees the gift either TFOYD or coal, not both TFOYD and coal. This poses the question of when exactly quantum wankerposition ends and reality resolves into one possibility or the other.

Seeing this just reminds me that one is damned if one writes longfic because what if all that work goes into it and the recip hates it or doesn't read longfic, but one is also damned if one comes in close to the 1000 minimum because then clearly one didn't care enough to flesh it out properly.

Someone needs to explain what the exact correct middle ground is.

There isn't one, really. People are going to be terrible about your word count no matter what it is. People are just terrible.

The median this time around was at about 2200 words. So in that range.

1500 to 2500 is what my fic tend to be if I just go with inspiration for something I can actually manage to write with a deadline.

Like many things, there's no universal recipe for success, it comes down to personal preference. Not every recip will give you an indication what they prefer, but plenty of them will.

2500-8000 because that's my favorite length
