No, it was based on the Dear Santa boyband slash type exchanges. The title comes from a Christmas carol. I know at least one Jewish person who treats it as like ordering Chinese on December 24, like it's a secular thing.

It's so funny, why would you think this? It reveals on Christmas and it was named after "while we tell of yuletide treasure" and the very first post on the LJ comm said it was "the multifandom secret santa project" and the mods called it "Obscure Fandom Secret Santa." But there's always someone going, gosh golly gee, wasn't it started by people who wanted a non-Christmas holiday exchange? No, no it was not. No matter how much you want people to think it was for whatever whacky reason.

Fanlore says it was chopchica talking about signups in 2007, but I thought I remembered coffeeandink/melymbrosia talking about the deadline falling on a Jewish holiday in a different year. It's something that has come up a couple of times, to be sure.

The request doesn't exactly fit the bill of what OP is interested in, though. :( (Not a ship between two main characters and they are canonically enemies rather than friends/lovers/rivals. And one of them is technically in a canon het ship.)
