And another one!

I see my nemesis getting a fic that I love
And I'm like, "Fuck you"
I guess my 10k letter wasn't enough
I'm like, "Fuck you and fuck morbane, too"
Said, "If I was a long commenter, they woulda gamed for me"
Ha, now ain't that some shit?
(Ain't that some shit?)
And although there's pain in my chest
I still comment it's the best
And runs to coal to shout "Fuck you"

Don't star out words. It just means you can't block them as easily.

Only gets more irritating with the full context of their sign-up DNWs.

https://tagset2023.fandom.tools/#/user/Itylien

TBF at least the, uh, underage noncon is between a violent war leader who knocks a 16-year-old across a room, so it works okay characterization-wise. Sixteen-year-old, who was the servant of the war leader's enemy, later ends up serving the war leader for a while.

At least that's what I can tell from a skim of one of the translations on Project Gutenberg.

https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/37027/pg37027-images.html

(NB the Rzędzian character who was nominated is Jendzian in the above translation, if anyone's curious)

Wait, what's wrong with the DNWs? Other than DNWing gen lol

Re: Opinions on this letter....?

Well, let's see. They DNW BDSM, but also ask specifically for femdom for one of their requests. They DNW "queer themes" in all of their requests, which is either uselessly vague or offensive or both, depending on your perspective.

I mean, they obviously don't see it that way, but there are a lot of queer themes in "Write me a fic about how Tanyuu and Kumado romantic and sexual relationship works with them both being compound beings - meaning: a person with a mushi inside." As far as I can tell, the mushi do not have the same gender as they do, or necessarily any gender. But no queer themes here! We are exhorted to explore this, but also just write uncomplicated het. I guess. Fun.

Also the "I don't really want a gen fic but do your best!" part of the DNW list is hilariously as if they saw that they're not supposed to DNW gen, considered it for all of five seconds, then put up their middle finger in a similar way to Ebony Dark'ness defying the preps.

Also. This one got to be underage non-con. Not violent, brutal or explicit and not like... necessarily in focus but it got to be there. Proceed with caution. It's got to be underage noncon, but it can't be explicit or brutal... okay, hints, not graphic? ... What does "not necessarily in focus" mean? What does "proceed with caution" mean?

Snuff, watersports, scat all that good stuff ;DDD
I can't stop giggling at this part

I'm just baffled by how they list slice of life stories as a like but also DNW gen.

And am still hung up on "Fem!dom always good." but "Save the BDSM for someone who will appreciate it."

Oh, wait, there's more detail in the letter, maybe that will explain - No.

Sign-up: "This one got to be underage non-con. Not violent, brutal or explicit"

then - "I really want a out of it rapist and long-suffering slave-to-circumstance victim stuff. Not violent, not brutal. ... I'd not be against receiving something set after the book where the rape I've mentioned is alluded to as something that requires revenge. Preferably in kind. In this situation I am ok with lucidity, brutality and violence. "

Oh ffs. Just pay someone to write for you or do Id Pro Quo exclusively or something.

"As far as I can tell, the mushi do not have the same gender as they do, or necessarily any gender. But no queer themes here! We are exhorted to explore this, but also just write uncomplicated het."

Sounds like the DNW is working as intended if it's keeping insufferable people like you from writing fic about how the "gender" of kami ghost bugs living in them makes their sex queer.

OK, what does "no queer themes" mean to you?

Because to me, "Write a story about how one character has a deeply alien curse-being inside her, and one character had their soul replaced by another such being, and how these unique ways of existing affect how they view relationships and sex" inherently overlaps queer themes.

I think it's working as intended to broadcast their homophobia

Re: Opinions on this letter....?

No. This is stupid. It does not make fandom a safer, more respectful, or more progressive space to go around accusing people of various isms, merely because of minute differences in the ways that people across a variety of countries and first languages express their preferences for the characters and the types of stories they want to read about in a fiction exchange.

I don't like their wording and I don't like their prompts so I'm not going to pick up their pinch hit. I cordially invite you to do the same. And stop there.

Ohh, that makes sense now! They're not trying to ward off queer themes, they're trying to ward off particular authors - the "insufferable" ones who have enough of a basic grip on queerness to understand that this request/DNW is contradictory! Thanks coalie you've cracked the case :)

Echo is such a great VN. It's so amazing. If i finish my assignment and the request is still out there, I'll pick it up.

If the PH is still lingering in even two days, I’d be concerned. Yuletide’s pinch hitters normally pick things up faster than that.

For the 2 that are lingering now... I get it.

Yeah, a lot of the time I'd tend to assume quickly returned pinch hits are people who think they have access to a canon to write something and then when they go to actually do canon review realise they got rid of it in a clearout, it was pulled by the platform they were going to get it from or whatever.

"No queer themes" is too vague as a DNW for me, but I wouldn't make assumptions about the way the requester feels about real queer people without other clues. My first thought was that they're ESL and not used to phrase things for international fandom. /has been there.

It also makes you look like a teenager from Twitter with "inc*st and p*do shippers DNI" on their bio.

According to the locations they enter on their own letters, they're in Poland. They've been doing Yuletide since 2018, though have only recently added the "queer themes" DNW.

I think it's been like this for the last couple of years or more, actually. Somebody dug up the numbers for the initial batches of pinch hits on FFA and this year wasn't overlong by recent standards. (46 hours to claim 40 pinch hits this year vs 36 hours to claim 34 last year and 55 hours to claim 38 in 2021.) Yuletide pinch hits still go way faster than most but the days of them all immediately disappearing before you can dive in to try to claim one are probably further in the past than it feels like.

(Honestly, I partly blame the switch to Google Groups, which probably saw some general attrition of the number of people following the list, especially since Google makes you jump through slightly more hoops than Yahoo did, requiring an account instead of just an email address and not having a functioning RSS feed any more. So in some cases people may just be taking more time to even find out there are pinch hits up.)

My experience with Polish people in international fandom spaces is that they come off as very blunt when they speak English. They either become my fandom friends or the most insufferable individuals. No middle ground.

I'm a recent Yuletide participant (my first was in 2020) and I didn't notice any difference. What I did notice is that every year when a few PHs linger for a couple of days, there's always someone panicking. But they all get picked up pretty quickly anyway.

This time there's a FIAB deadline going on, so I can see why they're a little slower. The FIAB PH I picked up is due today, so I'm not picking up anything else for now.
