And another one!

I see my nemesis getting a fic that I love
And I'm like, "Fuck you"
I guess my 10k letter wasn't enough
I'm like, "Fuck you and fuck morbane, too"
Said, "If I was a long commenter, they woulda gamed for me"
Ha, now ain't that some shit?
(Ain't that some shit?)
And although there's pain in my chest
I still comment it's the best
And runs to coal to shout "Fuck you"

Re: Fandoms you had to drop

I was on the fence about two much-loved canons that are both on the cusp of ineligibility for Yuletide, even under the new eligibility rules.

I ended up dropping both from my requests because a bunch of other people requested them, and I wanted to give sign-up priority to other wanted fandoms that nobody else was requesting but many other people were offering.

No regrets!

Oooooh, m/m xeno, please!!!

Does it count that I didn't drop a fandom I should have dropped?

I dropped one beloved fandom because I decided there was another one I wanted even more, and I also felt nervous about prompting for it. Every time I tried to write out prompts for that fandom, the words wouldn't come, so out it went. And yeah, I felt a bit sad, but no real regrets about dropping it.

I was considering requesting this one tiny fandom, but on trying to do canon review to get ideas for my letter, I found that the canon wasn't holding up for me. It just wasn't sparking anything, and I doubt I would've got fic for it, either.

Then I revisited another canon for letter ideas, and that one, I still liked and cried at the end (again). It was a world of difference, and according to the sign-up summary, two people who aren't me are offering it!

I dropped two I like a lot. When thinking about writing my prompts I found that I don't want to write prompts for them and not get that one porny story of my dreams. Likewise I dropped them from my offers, because I found I don't want to write someone else a story in them. I swapped out a third fandom because I have asked for that on another account in the past and I don't want to mix accounts like that. (Before someone asks, I only signed up with one account.)

Dropped one because I only wanted to read about two specific characters having nasty hatesex, but it’s kind of a Dignified Fandom and I worried someone with lots of academic knowledge would get assigned it and be horrified/write me gen fic

Not for my requests, but for my offers, I dropped at least one because I realized that I didn't have any solid story ideas in case of a blank sign-up, and there were too many requests without letters. I could probably have come up with something, but I'd have been cranky about it.

I've decided that I can absolutely cope with an "Any Characters" request, or a sign-up with zero optional details. Either would be a challenge, since I like assignments with defined prompts and preferences, but I can deal.

Just please, not both at the same time.

:(

Anyone who asks for any characters and gives zero details literally wants anything. Therefore, they must also want a fic where all the characters sit together in a blank white room on folding chairs and discuss Friedrich Engels unfinished 1883 work, Dialektik der Natur, which attempted to apply Marx's idea of dialectical materialism to the natural world, while one of them, and only one, is holding a cup of coffee.

*unzips pants* Fuck yeah

(Anonymous) 2023-10-22 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, this *is* Huntress. It literally says so right there on the letters post. https://yuletide.dreamwidth.org/304485.html?thread=4905061#cmt4905061

I have no idea why you think you're being accused of being Huntress. I was talking about the request.

shocked by the conversation in the discord about how people view their treats and their original gift the same way and so it's fine to not label a treat because the recip should like both the same. I always comment on my assigned gift first, and make sure I gas it up more than anything else (obv not if it were coal, but like if all gifts are equal). I know we can all look at this differently, but it feels disrespectful to me to treat a treat like a main course when your real main course writer is right there seeing it.

phew, yes, canon hints please

Re: Fandoms you had to drop

(Anonymous) 2023-10-22 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to ask for one but when I went to write the request it would have been paltry compared to my others, so I just let it go.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-22 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone who asks for Any Characters (or a no-characters fandom) and has zero optional details is probably someone who knows nothing about exchange culture and is not at all invested in getting a specific story, so you can fearlessly do whatever you want.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-22 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I really dislike the idea of treats.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-22 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hope you have treats turned off, then. Because I wouldn't want to go out of my way to make you 5-course meal, just because I thought you were cool.

a little plotty, a little porny, full of feelings, by someone who actually likes writing femslash, longer than 5k, and if i'm really asking then a little dark and twisted would be great.

you should drop a little canon hint, just because. no reason.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-22 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
A gift is a gift is a gift.

(Anonymous) 2023-10-22 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
something i already have a good idea for, because i have SO little time to write this year! would love to get prompted for something either political and sad, or a little bit ridiculous and fun (depending on the fandom)

(Anonymous) 2023-10-22 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If we go just by intent and effort, it's the treat that should be more special because it's something the creator made for you with no obligation and nothing in return. Assignments are just quid pro quo, treats are someone putting in extra effort.

But in practice, to me, it's not actually relevant. How I feel about a gift depends on the content, not authorial intent. If the one is better than the other, I will react accordingly (in terms of comment length/bookmark/rec), regardless which of them is my main gift and which is a treat.

SA

(Also, if my favorite fic in an exchange is one that's not written for me, it might well happen that my comment on that one is longer than on my actual gift. I'm not going to rein in my enthusiasm for something just because my assigned writer will compare my responses and get jealous.)
