And another one!

I see my nemesis getting a fic that I love
And I'm like, "Fuck you"
I guess my 10k letter wasn't enough
I'm like, "Fuck you and fuck morbane, too"
Said, "If I was a long commenter, they woulda gamed for me"
Ha, now ain't that some shit?
(Ain't that some shit?)
And although there's pain in my chest
I still comment it's the best
And runs to coal to shout "Fuck you"

Perfectly IC snarky case-fic where I nail the details of time, place, and culture for my recip

Say the DNW character is Batman, and the requested characters are Robin and Alfred. (Caveat: I am, at best, distantly familiar with Batman stuff.)

One could write a story about Robin and Alfred are hanging out in the "Manor," with no reference to Master Wayne. (Where's Master Wayne? Not important. He's just Not Here Right Now, and Robin and Alfred are incurious about his whereabouts, so incurious that they never think about him at all.)

One could write a story where Robin and Alfred take down some Gotham City criminals. (Where's Batman? Not important. Robin is on the case, Alfred is along to assist/supervise, nobody in the story pauses long enough to consciously wonders where Batman is.)

One could write a story where Robin and Alfred go on a picnic, or are kidnapped by the Joker, or visit Arkham Asylum. Where's Batman? Nobody stops long enough to wonder why he's not around. He's not important in this exact story-moment; Robin and Alfred have better things to think about and talk about.

Obviously, canonically, Robin and Alfred only know each other due to Batman; obviously he "exists" beyond the fringes of the no-Batmans-allowed fanfic. But there's no necessity for him to be foremost in the minds of the characters when they're off doing their own thing. They can just...not think about him, ever. Poof. He's gone.

if someone requested Rose and Jack in Dr. Who fandom and DNW'd the Doctor, it would be really hard to write anything other than a total AU, because even if you carefully didn't mention the Doctor the fact that they weren't mentioning the Doctor would become a major thematic part of the story.

I now DESPERATELY want to read this story! The lacuna of The Doctor, the question of why neither one is mentioning him, in a canon chock full of timey-wimey and altered memories... it sounds fantastic!

A dark, plotty AU would be amazing!

I get where you're coming from the way you're arguing in this thread but I think you might just be unaware that there are many people who read and write fanfic that don't seek out something that deals with the same moral dilemmas and themes as the source material, but rather want to play with their favorite characters and put them in new circumstances. I can understand the disappointment if you offer the canon wanting to write a fic which sheds more light on the subject of misogyny but in a way it feels like I'm watching you argue against a request for The Terror which says they don't want racism, colonialism, cannibalism or class based discrimination. It's surprisingly easy to write fic without these things coming up despite them being the core of the canon, you can probably find thousand of fics that don't touch on these topics at all.

Essentially what I'm saying is if you write the guy covered in motor oil fixing some robot's parts (sorry I don't remember a lot from the film), I'm sure they'll enjoy it and you don't have to make it an essay on misogyny not contradict the canon or go AU.

Any hints on canon, coalie?

I was busy boggling at how they're requesting the Moon Knight comics which they straight up admit they haven't read, and requesting four Dune characters while only mentioning two of them at all (but also mentioning a bunch of other characters they didn't request!).

Femslash porn. Or maybe incest porn. Or both at once??

I'd like to write some deep world-building for an alien culture.

Hatesex, either before or after the canonical torture. Or during!! I'm not picky.

Just found this. Thoughts?

Well no, I'm not saying it's odd because all fics about Ex Machina need to be About misogyny, it's more that you'd really have to know what exactly the recip would consider a fic that Contains misogyny. From the DNW: "not even a trace of it, please!"

Not familiar with The Terror, but it's sort of like asking for a Yellow Wallpaper fic, with a prompt asking for a focus on the narrator and her husband, and DNW misogyny - the entire plot of the Yellow Wallpaper, and particularly the relationship between her and her husband, is about that. The actual situation they're in is the misogyny, so should the writer just describe the situation and pretend it isn't misogyny?

(SPOILERS) Ex Machina is about Nathan living in an isolated underground home building robotic servant women and abusing them until they murder him in a desperate attempt to escape, and the requester wants fic about his relationship with the robots, without misogyny! I don't think it's outrageous to think that's a difficult request to fill! Not immoral, mind you - but a really difficult needle to thread.

IDK. I.e. if Rose and Jack would hook up, I don't really think it would be AU or OOC if neither them nor the narrative explicitly mentioned the Doctor.

SA

I would consider a fic about a guy hanging out with the female servants that he's keeping captive to hit a misogyny DNW, is what I'm saying. Whether or not the narrative called it misogyny, describing misogynistic circumstances and actions to me would count as "a trace" at least.

The prompt that I got last year, but it's a longfic and addresses things last year's fic only teased.

I could probably do it without either of them explicitly mentioning the Doctor, but there would still be traces of the Doctor in it, you know? Like if one of them says/thinks/acts out "Tonight is going to be about just us, not anyone else" there's still an implied "for this once we aren't going to make it about the Doctor" in there.

I don't know if that would count as violating the DNW technically, but especially with a really strong DNW, I would feel like it's close enough in spirit that I wouldn't be comfortable writing it for that person.

It's probably partly a matter of opinion whether you could write a story about Rose and Jack having a day out together where the Doctor's effects on their lives and relationship really truly never comes up at all in anything even via the empty spaces without going OOC, but I don't think I could do it without feeling like I was going OOC because that's a fundamental part of who they both were after they met the Doctor and how their IC interactions work.

Doctor Who example coalie:

I just don't think you could do this, either. A story where Robin and Alfred get kidnapped by the Joker or fight crime or visit Arkham and neither of them ever, even just once, thinks about Batman? That would be weird and stilted and OOC. They would! They would think about Batman if they were kidnapped by the Joker! Maybe all they would do is think "Batman is currently in space with the JLA so we're on our own" but if neither of them even thought about it that would feel wrong. I mean I suppose I could do it if I had to but it would feel like I was deliberately writing badfic where all the emotional arcs that should be there were missing and there were giant plotholes.

I might do the picnic, or "Alfred helps with homework" or something, by resigning myself to doing a boring plotless thousand words. Sure, you can work around anything by writing badfic. But I wouldn't like it.

It wouldn't have to be about Batman, it could absolutely focus on their relationships with each other and them kicking ass on their own. But you'd ask for that by saying that's what you want it to focus on, not by DNWing Batman.

I don't see why a fic like that would be badfic? Slice-of-life fics can be great. Maybe they're not your thing in general, but they're only badfic if they're badly written.
