Nov 25-29: Check-In

(Anonymous) 2019-11-24 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
To motivate myself and, hopefully, others, I'm going to start posting threads for the weeks and the weekends before the deadline. (Unless they're really annoying, in which case I'll stop, but I think we've done some similar things before?)

Reply with your goal for this time period and check in at the end of it.

We have. A number of years ago the writing thread was really active!

My goal is to have a short story for another challenge I signed up for before Yuletide finalized today. I have a rambly rough draft, no ending. Going to fix that and I'll only have editing to do later in the week.

Also today, I need an ending for one yuletide story I've already written. Revisions later in the week.

Of the two other stories planned, I need first drafts. I kind of know what I'm writing, so I'd like to have a solid first draft for both of those by bedtime tomorrow. I'd say today, but I have other things to do and might not have time. I'll reply to this with updates. I hope several people join in!

That's an impressive amount of stuff to juggle. Good luck with all the drafts!

Thanks! The last couple of days have been productive because instead of procrastinating writing I've been procrastinating housework and holiday prep. Ha! Here's where everything stands.

1. Short story for non-Yuletide challenge. Rough draft COMPLETE at way too many words for a short requirement challenge. my god.
2. Yuletide assignment. A thousand words of rough draft, probably a thousand left.
3. Yuletide assignment (sock). Rough draft COMPLETE at just under 4,000 words.
4. Yuletide treat #1. Rough draft complete at about 2,000 words.
5. Yuletide treat #2. 1,100 words of rough draft. Not sure how much is left. Probably 2-3k
6. Yuletide treat #3. 550 words of rough draft. Maybe a thousand to go.

A solid 9,500 words of that has been in the last 3 days, and I still intend to get another 500 or so written tonight to help offset the coming days when I'll have much less time.

Done for the day.

2. Yuletide assignment, rough draft COMPLETE at about 2000 words. Three down, three (treats) to go!

Goals:

-Finish canon review
-Notes for 3-4 potential fic ideas
-Maybe do a beta job.

- go back to the main assignment and reread with fresh eyes
- send it to a friend for SPAG
- finish the porn part of the treat: if I could only decide who tops

For #3, since I was working through a similar dilemma, potential solutions (these are for M/M, so if your story is F/F, potentially pointless):

1) instead of PIA penetration, how about sticking with frottage, blowjobs, or 69?
2) topping from the bottom / riding
2) switching halfway through ... I am realizing just now that I don't think I've ever read this scenario in a fic before ... though I am not sure why ... are there practical/physical obstacles to doing that? (Aside from fanfiction's love for excessive prep for anal in m/m)

Re: Nov 25-29: Check-In

(Anonymous) 2019-11-25 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
So I mulled this over... it could really work? My personal preference with many m/m ships is switching. I'm going to write two sex scenes where one is more "dominant" than the other, and flip the dynamics over for the PIA. The flipping would be plot-driven, yay!

And god, not a fan of the excessive prep in every fic. For this, my plan is more like porn polaroids: moving snapshots of what's going on.

Thank you, coalie! From my porn to yours!

AYRT

Sounds great! I hope I can find your fic when the collection is released, this all sounds very RTMI.

"And god, not a fan of the excessive prep in every fic."

One finger, two fingers, three fingers, fuck! Gets really old. Nods.

Congrats on having your main assignment drafted already! I look forward to being where you are.

Any clue from your recip's works, bookmarks, or past letters about who they'd prefer topping?

Thank you! Hoping you'll power through your main fic soon!

Topping expectations: no clue. It's a smallish fandom with no real explicit fics to date. I'll be a porn trailblazer. I waffle because there's a nerd and an athletic guy, so the go-to is the jock, right? However, there's something about that nerd and the dynamics that make me want to have him do the other guy. I'm going to go with this feeling!

Make a few edits to my assignment and find a beta for it.

Write the second draft of treat #2 (treat #1 is waiting until December, because it's a Christmas fic and I need to be in the right mood).

Decide whether I have the time and brainpower to write a third treat, and if I do, start writing down the ideas I have for it.

So far, I've written ~600 words and that's the framework for about 1/3 sections, so I'm hoping this ends up close to 2k when all's said and done. It's a canon-divergence/rewrite of a part of canon so another person can be present.

I write on Wednesday evenings so will hopefully bang out another chunk then.

Actually work on my assignment, rather than glaring at it and then going and writing more of my treat instead.

Maybe finish something? (lol no these are the fics that never end, I'll be astonished if this treat lands south of 10k and considering how much goddamn plot I still need to shove into my assignment it'll probably end up in the same boat, WHY can I not manage to write short fics ffs)

... Beta???

Haha, coalie, I feel for you, but I'm also not seeing a concrete goal here. Maybe add 1k to your assignment? :P

Re: Nov 25-29: Check-In

(Anonymous) 2019-11-27 09:22 am (UTC)(link)
... That's fair. BUT in my defense I have written almost 3k on my assignment in the past couple of hours, which if you'd told me I'd manage this morning I would not have believed, and just goes to show that I have no ability to judge my own potential writing quantity.

(Let's call it another 2k by the end of tonight? I would really like to finish some stuff.)

SC

Not quite - closer to 1.5k. But not bad, all the same.

Re: Nov 25-29: Check-In

(Anonymous) 2019-11-27 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Nearly 4.5k in a day? That's fantastic!

Re: Nov 25-29: Check-In

(Anonymous) 2019-11-28 10:29 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently I wasted a lot of potential writing time assuming that sprints were too artificial to work for me. Which is ridiculous in hindsight - gamification worked great and that's as artificial as it comes - but oh well. Maybe I can sprint myself through the last 15k or so of Nano in, uh. Two days. Sure.

I didn't post a goal earlier but I did manage to upload drafts for my assignment and a first treat during the past couple of weeks. Will need to do some editing, but they are both more or less solid, so it's just going to be some mild tweaking between now and reveal.

Now I'm going to go back to Treat #2.
