Anyone having early struggles with their assignment?

My recip had (only) one really general prompt that was just the wrong amount of information for me -- think "I'll be happy with anything about X!" where X is something I'm fine writing, but have no ideas for on my own. If it had been "write me anything about the canon!" I'd have ideas, but all of my ideas are about other things, and I don't want to ODAO when there's nothing actually wrong with their request. I'm happy to write about X, I just don't inherently find it interesting. If they had ANY specific prompts, or discussion of why they find X interesting, or even general likes for me to work with, it would be so much better.

I was hoping canon review would help inspire me, but so far, not really. I have a general idea for how to structure the fic, but no content to fill it in yet. Sigh. Anyone have brainstorming tips?

What kind of thing is X? Character, world, plot, relationship? Like, "I'd be happy with anything about Alice's backstory," or "I'd be happy with any casefic," or "I'd be happy with anything about the magic system"?

Do they have any bookmarks you can look through for ideas about X, or past fics that might touch on it (not necessarily in this canon) or any posts about X or about the canon in general?

Does anyone else in the fandom have any letters or requests?

My only guideline is one super vague prompt and not even any likes/dislikes, and it's driving me nuts. I went through their (sparse) AO3 and have some vague idea of what they might like, possibly, in terms of rating and general fluff-to-angst ratio, but translating that into an actual fic is... Oof.

I'm just focusing on canon review now and hoping inspiration strikes, because I'm not interested in their other fandoms (which of course have better prompts than the one I matched on)

I feel ya, coalie. I drew a fandom I love and would enjoy writing for, but the request is basically a 'do anything.' I have the whispering of an idea (but it won't make much of a story, IMO). I dislike "anything!" requests, because if I'd had a solid idea on my own I'd have written the story a long time ago. I want *your* ideas and assumed you had some since you requested something written in this fandom!

A different fandom they requested has interested me, and since the canon is short, I may see if that sparks a better idea instead.

Can you trawl the beta post for someone who can brainstorm with you maybe? Alternately, I started a brainstorming post below.

Can you pull from a letter/kink meme with a similar dynamic? If A & B are childhood rivals that they want to become lovers later in life, you go looking at Harry & Draco letters for prompts to crib from, that kind of thing. You can ask for letters that fit whatever general likes and dynamic your recip does.
