Promo post

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
what are you already checking out from the promo post?

which promos left you with barely more information than when you started reading?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
OK, I'll accept any comments of being stupid, but I'm new here, what is this exchange about exactly?

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Fandoms with zero-to-a-very-small-amount-of fic about them aka "rare" fandoms. Getting more fic for those fandoms. That's the core premise of Yuletide.

After that, what exchanges are you familiar with? That might help for aligning context.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Ah, I think I heard about this. I'm most familiar with Trick or Treat.

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 10:43 am (UTC)(link)
Right! Some of the biggest differences between Trick or Treat and Yuletide:

-Rare fandoms focus/requirement, as mentioned above
-AND matching. This is a peculiar Yuletide thing. In ToT you might request characters A, B, C, and your creator might offer C, and so you match, and they write/draw you C. ToT and most exchanges have OR matching. In Yuletide, if you request characters A, B, C, only writers who have offered A, B, C or ANY can match to you, and they're expected to include all of characters A, B, and C.
-Yuletide hides AO3/app requests until just after assignments go out. Letters, however, are fine. So you can only get a partial view of what requests you might match to, and most of the info comes from letters.
-No theme. Although Yuletide reveals works on December 25, works are not expected to be seasonal or Christmas themed, and requiring that is frowned upon.

They're quite different exchanges, honestly. The biggest similarities are:

-Both draw a huge crowd: each can be a fun event for feeling the general buzz or providing a huge array of prompts or connecting with fans from your niche of a fandom

-Both have a robust treat culture. You aren't guaranteed multiple gifts - even in ToT - but a lot of people are invested in you getting them.

"Ephemeral canons" is a fad I could do without

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That includes commercials. Do your own ephemeral exchange, dammit!

(Anonymous) 2022-09-17 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
how in the shit did you find your way to coal without knowing anything about Yuketide?

I'd say the grand tradition of the Folgers Incest Commercial elevates Ephemeral canons above a fad?

omg

New post!!!!!!!!!!

The first Ghost Soup Infidel Blue fic was in 2010. The first Folgerscest fic was 2011. A "fad" that spans more than half the event's lifespan isn't a fad anymore, it's just tradition.

+1

Welcome, but also how?

I watched a couple of the short YouTube links! The 5-min animated movie about the circus performers was cute, although not something I'd be fannish about. The series of music videos with the goth/cheerleader f/f romance was fun, although I guess I'm old because I found the word "fuck" in the songs distracting. I was very into the dark-haired gal though, esp in HS.

Eh, people are having fun. Just request your own beloved fandoms and ignore the ephemeral stuff.

That's what I'm doing.

Decisions, decisions

(Anonymous) 2022-09-18 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I have TOO MANY THINGS I want to nominate.

Coalies, how do you pare down nominations to only a few when you equally want ALL of these things and don't have time to make half a dozen sock accounts???

"SoftBank's Next 30-Year Vision (2010 corporate PDF)" is delightfully creepy.
