I always make a point to leave a long detailed comment on whatever I get, for exactly the reason you've described above - it sucks to not receive a comment on something you've poured your heart and soul into and I refuse to contribute to that. Thankfully I haven't got a single YT gift that I wasn't delighted with yet, but I think I'd still do it even if the fic in question was mediocre or outright terrible.

The very first exchange I participated in, I didn't really like my gift (OOC, bad SPAG) – but I did my damnedest to make sure my author never had a reason to suspect I felt that way! Left a long comment highlighting a few lines I liked and gushing about how sweet the fic was.
