This is sort of the opposite, but I'm old enough that I learned to type on a typewriter, so I automatically hit the space bar twice after every sentence. I've had betas go through and remove. Every. Double. Space.

In a 10k story.

By hand.

I do that sometimes (without the typewriter excuse, I just type too fast and sometimes my thumb gets a lil enthusiastic with the spaces) and just find and replace all the double spaces with single spaces.

Why would they do that by hand? That's fixed by one search and replace in a minute, whether your story is 1k or 100k.

I learned on a manual typewriter as a child, and when I was in school, the rule was two spaces after a period. It did take me a while to get out of that habit.

BTW, if they removed them by hand, they need to learn to use their word processing program. Find/replace would take them maybe 10 seconds.

I did not learn to type on a typewriter, but I did learn that a period always needs two spaces afterward. I've been typing that way for 20+ years. I don't think I could unlearn it now even if I wanted to.

The only time I bother to find-and-replace is if I'm posting someplace where there's a character limit and the extra spaces are putting me over the limit. Other than that, I just leave them. I've never had anybody say anything about it or even notice it, as far as I can tell.

I was also taught that way through a computer keyboarding class I took in high school, circa 1999, and did wind up unteaching myself when I realized a lot of things strip it out automatically and I could save my thumb a split-second, but then I wound up half reteaching it to myself since double taps on spacebars on smartphones and the Mac OS automatically insert the period. Constantly relearning on the fly. :D

What a weird thing to do. HTML automatically strips out that second space.

Basic HTML does, but some places where you can input text don't. For example, AO3 will add extra HTML to make sure there are two spaces after every period if you copy and paste a document that's formatted that way.

I agree that removing all the spaces is weird though. The extra space is not noticeable at all.

You're not supposed to have two spaces at the end of each sentence? Since when? Honestly befuddled coalie.

I was never taught to do this. I am almost 40.

+1
I'm 46, and was told the two spaces convention was already obsolete when I had computer class in 8th grade.

I am younger than that, and learned two spaces on typewriter, one on computer.

I'm in my mid 30s, and have never used a typewriter, but in computer class when we learned how to touch-type, we had to put two spaces after every period or the program would mark our scores down by one point per missed space. I learned touch-typing in elementary school, so this was the mid 90s.

The 00s some time, I think. We no longer need the extra now that tech has improved its auto typesetting. It took a while for it to change in school and advice though.

I learned typing from Mavis Beacon in DOS, which also demanded double spaces. I still do a find replace all on double spaces because there's almost always a few that slip through

I work in law and when I got into the profession about ten years ago, this was standard practice. I hated it and did it very begrudgingly. Thankfully, in many documents, it's no longer required (although may still be required for court filings, I don't touch that at all), but there are still a lot of senior attorneys who are adamant about following the two spaces thing.

You can just search and replace double space with simple space in word, I do it all the time before handing in anything. It only takes a few seconds
