I often use socks. I write a LOT and feel like if I'm gonna write 10 fics I might as well get 4 back.

I used to DNW gen before I came to coal/FFA and realized how much it was frowned upon.

The DNW isn't in my sign-up anymore, but my feelings for gen fic haven't changed.

It isn't an enforceable DNW in Yuletide, and you should probably do other exchanges if getting a gen ODAO would absolutely ruin your experience, but I think it's reasonable to want shipfic above everything else and to say as much in your letter, outside the DNW section. I think it's only good manners to honour such a preference and the vast majority of writers will be happy to do so regardless of their personal tastes.

I still don't want slash with a few exceptions for canonically gay characters. I would DNW M/M if it wouldn't look bad.

That's fine, as an almost 100% gen writer. If your writer is so hellbent on writing gen despite your preferences, they may as well just go ODAO (which IMO would be quite impolite, they should either write you what you want in this case or default).

Personally, I typically game for gen requests. If I get a shippy one, that's not the recip's fault, it's mine. They don't owe me a gen-out.

I'm a repeat defaulter at various stages including once post-deadline and and close-ish to reveals. To be fair, the post deadline default was due to getting surprise! evicted because my roommate didn't pay the fucking rent (they held the lease, which I was not on.)

But I've still ended up not completing a story about 1/3 of the yuletides I've signed up for.

Post-deadline on a pinch hit, or "post-deadline" on a work you uploaded a placeholder for? Because one's judgment-worthy and the other isn't.

I mean, it’s not ideal, but getting unexpectedly evicted is a quintessential extenuating circumstance, so I’m not judging you for that one.

This sin is definitely not a behavior I'd recommend and I hope I never find myself in the same situation.

A few years ago, I got an assignment that I drew an absolute blank on. Sparse requests, likes and DNWs, no letter. And I could think of absolutely NOTHING to write.

Usually as soon as I get my assignment I start jotting down ideas, but this one had me just sitting in front of a blank document and staring.

It didn't faze me at first, because I figured I had time, but life and other exchanges distracted me. And I was eager for a gift in one of my fandoms so I did not want to default... and then the no penalty deadline passed... and I still had nothing on the page.

Then it was two days before THE DEADLINE. Still absolutely stony blank nothing.

I panicked, and ended up dredging up a drawerfic I had written for a megafandom ages ago that I had never posted due to falling out of love with the fandom. I did a find and replace for the character names and posted it.

I used the editing time to tweak it, and found that the scenario was actually pretty IC for the requested characters, and just cut out the bits that didn't apply, renamed a few places, etc... and still had a well above the minimum fic.

The recip absolutely adored their gift, and the fic was recced in several different places. But deep down I still felt face-burning shame and was tempted for the longest time to anon the story.

after doing several very successful Yuletides in a row, i defaulted post-deadline with a placeholder and zero excuse besides being paralyzed by perfectionism (which I know isn't an actual excuse). definitely the worst fandom sin I've committed. the recipient had a treat already so at least no one was scrambling for a pinch-hit ... I ended up going to therapy about it because wtf. I haven't participated in yuletide in ~5 years; I might try to write a treat this year but I don't think I'm going to sign up again, just in case.

Is it still a bus pass if it looks complete to a mod but if I got hit by a bus, I would die knowing that my fic is definitely not complete? Because that's what all of my Yuletide fics have been at deadline.

I used Yuletide to complete a fic in that fandom I had already started writing, just because I wanted to get more eyes on it.

I created a sock specifically to make the dumbest requests I could think of, because I thought it was funny. The sock wasn't low-effort or anything (there were letters and fairly detailed prompts), but all of the prompts were really goofy and sometimes deliberately contrarian to the general mood of the fandoms. I eventually gave this up, because the effort:humor ratio was getting unfavorable, but in retrospect this was probably a dick move.

(For the record, the sock fulfilled all her assignments, posted a few tweets and pinch hits, and left prompt positive comments on every fic she received. Well-behaved, just with godawful prompts that I thought were funny.)
