Is it good etiquette to ask your assigned writer to archive lock their fic?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I would personally find such a request offputting at best.

Either way, I would want that to be in the letter or signup BEFORE assignments go out.

OP
I thought it was a weird request, but I've been out of the exchange scene for a while so I wasn't sure. Still, I'm glad I didn't get this assignment!

Definitely not cool. If there's something you want to read but don't want associated with your account, either (a) don't ask for it or (b) use a sock.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 12:46 pm (UTC)(link)
+1 I'd find it weird, rude and extremely entitled tbh. Like someone else mentioned, whether or not it's a gift, it's still the writer's story. It's for them to decide whether or not they want to archive lock it.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
No.

(Also, it's not good etiquette to request that your assigned writer not crosspost off AO3, just in case that also comes up. It's written for you but it's still the author's story.)

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. If your author may be writing you something you don't want associated with your main account, sock up.

Are you talking about a Pod Save America RPF request?

I thought it was funny to ask that considering their journal is public and all their porny requests thus are too.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
OP
No, but it's definitely for an RPF request -for Taskmaster New Zealand. Is this a common thing to ask in RPF fandoms? I feel so out of the loop!

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Does NZ have the weird porn laws like Australia does?

Yes, it's custom in a lot of RPF fandoms. It makes it harder for the people the fics are about to stumble across them.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it's not unusual for smaller RPF communities to lock down completely so that they're invisible to anyone who doesn't already know what they're looking for.

If it's RPF I wouldn't bat an eye at it.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that seems very normal to me.

I think it's reasonable for rpf, but I wouldn't necessarily do it for anything else.

I don't have a problem with it but I'd want to know why. I wouldn't ask why because that's rude, but I'd be curious.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's already very obvious why. OP decided to leave that part out for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely not. You can archive lock your own fic, but I think even that's frowned upon until after reveals.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Archive locking your fic is fine--your recip must have an AO3 account to participate, so they can access their gift no problem.

What is strongly frowned upon is deleting your fic. If it's necessary for your physical and/or mental wellbeing to delete your fic, the recommendation is to let the mods know and give your recip the opportunity to save their gift if they want. Otherwise, there's a decent chance you'll be banned from future Yuletides.

no, that's rood

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer to archive-lock my fic and generally archive-lock my exchange fic a few weeks or months after the exchange. (It seems rude to do so initially in case my recipient is on some device that's not their usual one and can't log in.)

While I don't think this would be a welcome request for most writers, you never know.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Only if it's RPF. Otherwise it's rude.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Still rude if it's rpf.
