I have never looked at anything about my recipient except their prompts and the amount of effort some of you appear to put into stalking creeps me the hell out.

lmao yeah, I look at my recip's DW and AO3 to see the sort of things they like, but I'm trying to figure out their tastes, not plumb the mysteries of their psyche!

You sound like a noob. Yuletide tradition has always included going by your recip's social media to get a feel for their tastes. It doesn't mean showing up at their front door, it means noticing they prefer the Twelfth Doctor over the Tenth Doctor and this may be relevant for the gift you are creating for them.

Don't listen to this person, OP. Coal represents a tiny overinvested handful of participants. Most people do not do this.

I've been doing Yuletide for years and I've never done this. People's letters and sign-ups are more than enough and I don't need to go creeping.

i know this isnt an unbiased datapoint, since i am also here on coal, but i feel like almost all of my friends that do yuletide do this. it's part of the fun! it's just mining for clues to help make the best gift! pretty standard and not creepy imo.

This is absolutely not true. I have never done this. I go by what they say in optional details or their letter, if it's easily available I might look at letters they've written for other exchanges, and I may look at the tags and summaries of fic they've written, but that's it.

I really don't care enough to do this. If it ain't in the letter/signup, I don't need to know.

I've been doing yuletide for years, and the only time I did this was when I got a blank signup and was attempting to find out a little more about the recipient's general tastes.

Every other time I've taken their letters at face value, because I know that what you ask to get for yuletide is not necessarily the same as what you tend to write, or what you've bookmarked, or what you like in a completely different fandom, or what you liked last year before a real life incident left a bad taste for Y in your mouth, or what a friend gifted you in a different exchange when they knew they could write X in the one way that wouldn't squick you.

Seriously; we're looking at their fannish twitters for their nerd opinions, not digging up their wallet name Facebook accounts and downloading photos of their children

name one person this week for non-wank-related anything

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
How can I be stalking my recipient if assignments aren't out yet?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
this does not sate my non-assigned boredom

(Anonymous) 2021-10-25 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's more silly than creepy, but if they've got time to burn, that's on them.

This old chestnut? I feel like you just directly copy-pasted this from some wank on the old coal. It's nostalgic! Almost cute even.
