I've heard of this fandom but don't know much about it. How popular do you reckon it is already?

How is this relevant at all? If it was under when following the regular rules, it's not an edge case. If it's clearly over next year, it won't be an edge case. What do you think makes it an edge case?

The AYRT may be thinking of Locked Tomb, which was under when it was nominated but over when nominations closed.

This wasn't even its first year of elibility, which is one of the things people like to argue - "it was obvious* this would be a big fandom, even though it had only been out for a month at the time of Yuletide noms."

You appear to hold the opinion that “barely over” does not make an edge case, and that the number cap is and should be completely inflexible. I disagree with this stance

From my POV, going from barely under to barely over during the nomination period or nomination review period *is* what makes it an edge case.

It’s not small compared to fandoms with 0 fics and no canonical tag, and it’s unlikely to jump from barely over to megafandom this yuletide. Letting the people who like it have *one* more yuletide harms no one.

(I was strongly against the decision to stop allowing fandoms in their first year regardless of size. I was also against the decision to stop allowing verifiably dead fandoms back into yuletide after a 10 year latency period, way back in the early 2010s.)

I think there were slightly less than 1000 fics posted when nominations first opened but already over 1000 by the time nominations closed, so it just squeaked in.

Yeah there were literally like 999 when someone made an evidence post and was like "please make an exception so we don't have to beg the fandom to stop posting until noms are over" and someone did post another fic but I guess they made the exception.

Is eligibility based on numbers when noms open or when noms close? It doesn't sound like an exception, really

I think technically when noms close, but also I can't remember any previous case where it mattered, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just change it for next year, because noms open makes a lot more sense really, it doesn't make sense to reject something that was valid when nominated

Ted Lasso will definitely have the most fics. Other than TL and The Locked Tomb, I think this might be The Good Place's last year of eligibility. It's got well over a thousand fics without filters and it's rounding on 800 with them. It's a slow grower and a closed canon, but it gets a new fic every few days, so if it's still in next year, that will definitely be it for it. Maybe Disco Elysium? It's been around for a while and is still way under the limit, but it had a lot of its growth this year.
