Re: DNW Workshop

I've been sitting on the sidelines for this one, but I feel like this is really hard for most fanfic authors to hit. I've been writing fanfiction for over fifteen years and I don't think that I would say that I have a style, other than a few minor and idiosyncratical grammatic things. When I think of authors who write in distinctive non-canon style, it's usually BNF authors. I can almost always tell an astolat fic for example. But could someone pick my work, even my original works (and I've written a fair amount by this point), out of a lineup? Probably not. And I don't think I'm a bad writer, I'm just not a GREAT writer.

For the most part, I think that all's fair in love and DNWs, but I think that this will be really hard for most lit-fandom fic writers to hit.

Imo Astolat isn't a great writer either. I find her prose tedious and I don't think she's terribly great at capturing character voices.

I'd almost definitely much rather have you than her as my assigned writer, even if I don't know you by name. Assuming we don't hate each other in namespace or something. That would be awkward.

AYRT I think that those are fair points (and I appreciate that you'd prefer me over anyone, definitely taking that W for the day). I think that BNFs, for better or worse, tend to have a distinctive style (maybe that contributes to them being BNFs?). I wouldn't say that I have a distinctive style, although who knows, maybe someone who has read each of my works would say differently. So this feels like a request that I would struggle with.

I feel like Astolat has a recognizable style precisely because she's so terrible at capturing character voices. She writes one specific pairing, and whatever fandom she's in, whatever characters she's writing morph into Those Two Dudes but wearing different hats.

+ 1 It would be my nightmare to be named as recognizable for this reason. If I have a “voice” that carries across fandoms then I’m doing something wrong as an author who always tries to match character voice/canon tone.

My favorite thing is when someone accidentally stumbles across one of my fics during the anon period and then when I reply during reveals they're like OMG ITS YOU. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BECAUSE IT WAS SO IN CHARACTER/THE PLOT WAS GREAT! I’m not a BNF but I think I have a reputation for popping up in fandoms you never knew I was into and writing *the* definitive fic for those who do have an overlap in random fandoms with me, and I couldn’t ask for more.

I'm aiming for having a distinct writing style, so it would be a compliment to me. I also don't think "in character" and "author's own style" are mutually exclusive. I want to write dialogue in character, but I want the narration and structure to be recognizably me.

Anonfail so we can judge the accuracy of that claim

What claim? I said that I want to and aiming for having a distinct style and if someone said it about me, it would be a huge compliment. I at no point claimed that I'm successful in my endeavours. I mean, obviously I hope I am, but I don't have AIRT's inflated confidence in my own skills.

Holy shit, do your farts also smell like jasmine?

Haha! There might be such a thing as too much self-confidence!

As someone who is mostly into very small fandoms, you are my least favorite sort of person. Talk about arrogant and annoying.

+1 million.

Re: DNW Workshop

It’s funny because there’s a particular self-important writer this made me think of and their style is very recognizable.

+1 This made me think of a writer in my tiny fandom.

You're absolutely right! But I find her style difficult to spot because she's not the only person who does this.

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-22 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
To me her pro work has a lot of characters with really distinct voices... weird

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mostly in live action fandoms, but there are a number of exchange regulars that aren't BNF whose style I would - and do - instantly recognize even when they branch out of their usual fandoms.

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I want you to name names so I know if I'm recognizable, coalie!

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ayrt

That might deanon me, sorry.

The thing is - this only works of you're very familiar with someone's body of work. Like, I've read maybe a handful of astolat's fics; I'm sure she has a distinctive style but I wouldn't be able to recognize it. But if I've read 20+ works by an author because I like them, I'm attuned to recognize that style. I'm know there are people who recognize my style from being guessed while my works were anon, but I'm definitely not a BNF.

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Genuine question: how would it deanon you?

Are they prolific but only write in one microfandom that you also mostly write/read in?

It sounds like you’re talking about a BNF (to you) that writes in a lot of different fandoms and is consistent in how they write, which seems impossible to deanon you. TDC fic may be samesey (in a good or bad way) but since she has written in like 100 fandoms across 500 fics, how in the hell would anyone know that it’s secretly you, ao3 user becky, that is on coal talking about them?

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)

Naming a single author wouldn't deanon me, but posting a laundry list of my favorite authors might. Probably not to the general coal population but at least to the authors.

And like I said, they're not BNFs. I like TDC's work, but I haven't read enough by them that I would recognize them.

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
NA

So you're concerned that the authors might, what? Find out you post on coal? Find out you like and recognize their work? What's the outcome you're concerned about here?

Anyway, I think for the purposes of this conversation, just one or two names would suffice.

Find out that I'm talking about them on coal, which they might not appreciate (I know I wouldn't). So I'm not going to do it other than in a vague general way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Oh yeah that makes sense. I was thinking like your top/random sampling of 1-3. A whole list would be overkill/deanon even if it was a bunch of big multifandom BNFs lol
