Yeah, a lot of that stuff reads like a) I am trying to be so open to all kinks I don't actively hate that I scare people off and b) I am fetishizing old-style two-white-dudes slash fic where you can tell who tops by the hair color and c) I am extremely socially awkward and bad at current fandom discourse.

But the "modern western genders" stuff is pretty clearly "I'm an actual real-life transphobe," otherwise they wouldn't think "modern western genders" means trans stuff. (I am super tempted to write them an Imperial Radch AU that meets all their qualifications. Definitely no modern Western genders there! Don't know how else to avoid it.)

I'm an old school fan, and "old-style two-white-dudes slash fic where you can tell who tops by the hair color" literally applies to 99% of my ships.

But anyone who talks about shipping as "fetishizing" is a major Tumblr anti red flag.

coalie who used the word fetishising: I wasn't referring to shipping as fetishizing, not even old-white-dudes shipping, I too can still enjoy a good bodie/doyle h/c wallow.

(Also if you happen to always ship the blond tops, whatever, you're allowed to have a type. If you insist the blonde always tops to the point that you claim your favorite top is blond even in the face of obvious photographic evidence that they very very clearly aren't, I mocked you in the 90s and I mock you now too.)

But I meant to say that it was that specific style of/era in m/m fics they were fetishizing, not the ships. Or kinking on, if you prefer that language. Or obsessed with. Not just the ships but clinging to being part of that very specific fandom tradition at the expense of everything else. It's like the fandom equivalent of somebody whose whole house is 1970s kitsch down to contents of their bathroom cupboard. And that's not necessarily bad but it's definitely kinktomato.

See, I wouldn't have blinked an eye at "kinking on" or "obsessed with". But "fetishizing" specifically has a connotation that makes it a big red flag IMO.

(Having said that, I just realized that I got it wrong! I like dark haired tops and blond bottoms, oops.)

It really reads like a direct inventory of all the things people used to complain about as bad slash stereotypes when I first got into fandom! Either they've been trapped in amber for twenty-five years or they just found a trove of oldfandom slash meta and discovered something about themselves. Given Renault fandom it could be either.
