Crossover Etiquette Question

(Anonymous) 2021-10-16 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi coalies,

I have a question about letter etiquette. I'm requesting a really small fandom – we're talking no-fics-at-all small. Because of its setting, it would be an easy crossover with a pretty big fandom (8k+ fics). I was thinking of putting in my letter that I'd welcome a crossover with Big Fandom if my author is interested – I'd hope that might catch the attention of someone who's in Big Fandom, especially if my letter ends up going out as a pinch hit. What do you all think? Is it within Yuletide etiquette to do that, and is it a good idea?

I think it’s ok to offer that as a prompt (as long as it is still mainly and clearly about your fandom, not big fandom) but I would make sure to include other options. On a purely subjective level, I think it’s better if it’s a fusion (i.e. set at Hogwarts), rather than “what if X characters from my fandom are on the run from Voldemort and cross paths with Harry, Hermione and Ron?”, but that’s a preference, not Yuletide gospel.

It's fine as long as you offer other prompts, and it's obvious you aren't only angling for the crossover, I put in at least a couple crossover prompts every year.

You might want to mention if you're ok with other crossovers, so it looks less like you're angling just to sneak in Large Fandom.

+1

Totally fine to prompt for a crossover. Less fine to make that your one, single, write this for me otherwise I'll commit suicide request.

Anyone that judges you for one prompt that includes Large Fandom among several other prompts would judge you regardless.

Thanks! I'll mention that about being ok with crossovers generally. Definitely not about angling to get Big Fandom in – rather, trying to make my own pitifully small fandom more attractive, lol!

Go for it!

Once in awhile people in horrible places like coal that nobody should visit have kvetched when a large-fandom crossover gets a ton of extra kudos etc. from the large fandom and blows the curve, but that's on the writer not the requester and also that is a dumb thing to whine about.

Only do it if you would love the crossover as your only gift

I'd honestly be over the moon to get anything in this fandom, lol!

I'm intrigued! What category/media type is the fandom?

Same! Every time a coalie talks about their tiny fandom, I wanna know what it is, so I can check it out!

Historical – turn-of-the-13th-century England, specifically :)

Don't do that. You want a rare fandom, suck it up and nominate the rare fandom.

Are you unstuck in time? Nominations are over. The rare fandom has already been nominated. Coalie is trying to write their requests now.

Is your head filled with lead? This isn't anywhere remotely close to being an answer to the question asked.
