I think this may have something to do with a lot of the regulars, many of whom often took pinch hits, not signing up this year.

A lot of people take PHs even when they don't sign up. I've done it in previous years.

Me too. I also never take myself off of PH, even when I'm not really interested in participating even for treating, just in case something grabs me.

It's only 50 fewer people than signed up in 2019.

Seems like it. Lots more newbies from Tumblr.

YT should just remove that "Any" choice because nobody really knows how to use it, especially newbies.

I genuinely meant "I love everybody nominated for this fandom, I will be happy with any of them" and followed it up with a bunch of prompts. It could use more explanation, definitely, but it's a useful option.

Same. I use it every year because for yt I genuinely want anything in my tiny fandom.

The only time it's gone wrong was the year I got OC badfic in a different, but related, fandom, but that was a treat anyway.

"any" should only be for offers, not requests

I think don't think it's fewer signups, but iirc there were more noms even though there were fewer signups. Which means more people than usual either nommed and didn't sign up, or socked up for noms only. That would've messed up the noms/offers ratio and made matching harder.

I do know people who nommed and didn't sign up. A bunch of them did it so friends could use their slots.

Yeah if that keeps increasing I wouldn't be surprised if they have to *heavily discourage* it somehow, the point is supposed to be you have to offer at least some things you didn't nom. (Still wouldn't fix the person with only czech-language requests, but would probably reduce iphs overall.)

CYRT I agree. I don't think it's a big problem as of yet, but it's definitely getting there.

How would *offering* at least one thing you didn't nominate help with IPHs? In the most extreme case, you just end up with everyone adding a five minute fandom and still have as many pinch hits as before.

They’re doing the 10k exchanges or working on auction fics. Some doing both.

Most people I know are doing FIAB and FFFX and are thinking about Heart Attack. I think for them Triple Crown is more attractive than Yuletide.

I'm doing FIAB and yes, I'm still in the throes of finishing up these fics I have extensions on and maybe taking a pinch hit.

However, I was thinking about HA and decided on Yuletide instead. "Triple Crown is more attractive than Yuletide" is too broad a generalization to be at all useful or provable. It depends too much on individual participants' tastes and preferences.

I’m an exchange regular who did sign up, but I’ve taken a massive step back from exchanges for mental health reasons this year and I wouldn’t be surprised if a number of other people are in similar boats. Yuletide’s the first exchange I’ve done in a while this year because it’s my absolute fave, but I know a number of my other exchange-regular friends are sitting it out because they’re on exchange hiatus or just busy.

I'm a regular; this is the first year I haven't signed up since 2007/8ish because I could only find one fandom I wanted to request (and I couldn't think of anything to nominate, either)!

That said, I'm on the PH list and nabbed the one I could do yesterday

I don't sign up and I do treats and pinch hits frequently.
