From the DNW section of the letter: Please have a beta and sensitivity reader, especially if you're writing a canon from a different country/background than your own. Not actually sure if this is enforceable or not? It struck me as pretty ridiculous, anyway.

I don't see how that's enforceable, since it might not always be possible.

It's not phrased as a thing they don't want, so I don't think it would be? Also I hope their canons are all set in mundane present day or someone's going to be looking for a native Tattooine sensitivity reader.

Was this before or after they said, "No OOC"?

BRB asking a random person who happens to be a specific ethnic background to perform unpaid labor for me in form of sensitivity reading my fic. Because that's totally cool.

I mean, I don't think there's a problem with posting an announcement that you're seeking a sensitivity reader. Asking specific people would be different, but a general call for help seems fine.

That said, since there's no guarantee you can get someone, totally unreasonable for recip to try to mandate it.

Yeah, why not pay for editors and sensitivity readers. You're gonna make so much money off this fanfic.

I've been a sensitivity beta reader for fanfic and I would be INCREDIBLY uncomfortable being a paid sensitivity editor. Professionally representing my ethnicity is very different than sharing my individual experience with an acquaintance. Exchanging money doesn't magically solve racism. Put some more thought into it.

Is this really listed in the DNW section or is it an unsolicited suggestion elsewhere?

Oh, this is that asshole who openly admits to only being halfway through Nirvana in Fire. Fuck them. This is not the kind of show where that works, they're putting the writer in a really awkward spot. Requesting a half finished canon is fine, but don't burden your author with it!

This person knows full well this DNW isn't enforceable and is just being an asshole. They've been in fandom for probably 20 years.

but if anybody spoils me for NiF beyond episode 35 I will murder them.

I was expecting something more like that lingering pinch hit where the poor person likes ex-Yu stuff and is clearly wary about people who don't get their culture. Instead, we have this.

I think this DNW should have been put in a couple of these fandom sections with specifics about what might be a problem. The first one sounds like it has potential for clueless writing in a way this recip might notice, but the rest? One of them isn't even set in the real world, one is set a long-ass time ago, one's set in an alternate earth, and the RPF they say they know next to nothing about. They'd have been better off with a request for no US-flavor AUs or something about how much they like the culture and setting of canon.

Neither is required of the fest, so no, not enforceable. DNWs are only for content of the story itself, not the method used to achieve that content.

It's never a bad idea to do that, but definitely not enforceable.

I just find these DNWs really condescending. Like they think they're some kind of exception for wanting well-written fic and are trying to micromanage it in any possible way.

It's not enforceable, and honestly it's an assholish and entitled suggestion. I would default on that person in a heartbeat and take my chances, or write them the most ODAO milquetoast navel-gazing shit imaginable.

I would write fic for the alternative Earth canon, and profusely thank my alternative Earth beta for their assistance in the author notes.
