With what money, exactly? I guess I could do a Gofundme, but I'm not sure "please donate so I can pay a sensitivity reader to check my Yuletide assignment" would get any bites.

Coalie, if someone doesn't feel like doing their assignment now and wants to do something else, and Yuletide treats aren't an option, they are not going to say "okay, I will do my assignment now". They'll say "oh, well, I'll write a bunch of ToT treats / do a bingo / sign up for another five exchanges / rearrange my furniture / play a merge game on my phone for two weeks / pick up a new canon and fall in love and have it take over my life".

You can't force people to prioritise something they don't want to prioritise.

+1. And some people like to line up the ideas for a bunch of fics, percolate on 'em, and then go on a writing blitz. Jumping back and forth between multiple works energizes them and stimulates their creativity.

There are probably as many approaches as there are participants. Telling someone "you must do it this way" isn't going to change the way they do things. It just makes the One True Way people look rigid and unimaginative.

+1 It's optional on top of something that's already optional. I'm not saying I don't read letters, because I do, but I will admit that I'm having a less stressful Yuletide this year with a recipient who didn't bother.

I haven't looked at my recip's letter since before assignments went out. Why? Because I'm in the middle of writing something else for a different exchange with a rapidly approaching deadline, and I don't want to get distracted!

I read my recip's letter before assignments went out. I'll read it again when I start writing, but that's not gonna be for some time.

"I'll read it when I get home from work" coalie is still at work (and should have resisted the temptation to get on coal) and did not claim it! So either another coalie did or someone else found the source.

(I'll probably still read canon though now that I've got it, it's still adorable.)

What's frustrating is coalies acting like this choice to reveal all requests when the IPHs are picked up is some completely new, arbitrary, unreasonable thing.

I'd rather have the requests going out feel like a party everyone's invited to.

It makes me glad so many ao3 exchanges hold to the standard that they don't open until everyone has a gift. Don't leave people behind! It does work as a motivating factor.

I assume you also never thank your author for a gift.

I just hope these people get some decent fills for their prompts. I've got a feeling, though, we'll see at least one of these popping up again as a PH, either because it's been claimed in bad faith or claimed earnestly in haste. I'm pretty conservative about claiming PHs--I don't ask for them unless I have a solid idea--but I get the impression other people are less uptight about claiming things.

Downloading off DailyMotion and cutting up the subtitle file into two might be a little annoying (assuming your preferred way to sail the high seas doesn't have the full movie available), but it doesn't look nearly as inaccessible as some people make it out to be.

There's also "completely earnest pinch hitter claimed it and was well on their way and then got hit with life". Let's not borrow trouble.

At least this way, the information is out there about which of their canons are shortest or otherwise easiest to access, and where they can be found.

My recipient has left detailed, unsolicited, patronizing concrit on my fics in the fandom we share before. It's making it hard to want to write for them.
