I like it! Trip Hop is always a good call for writing.

This show was a delight! I really enjoyed it.

Recs from past Yuletides

(Anonymous) 2021-10-15 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
Rec a favorite fic from a past Yuletide, or ask for recs.

Made this thread because I was thinking again of this fic, which is probably in my top ten all time Yuletide faves:

After, by woodironbone - Primer (2004), Aaron/Abe, 15k. Up until recently this was the ONLY fic for this movie on AO3 (now there's also an Animal Crossing fusion, lol). I love it because it leans so hard into the weird multiple-selves thing Primer has going on, and the interaction between those selves and the selves of the other character, and how a person might change over time... It's just gloriously psychologically weird and really uses the canon time travel to good advantage. And shippy, too! And 15k! Just neat.

Always and forever "A Flourish of Gold" by thelittlestbird, from Yuletide 2014, which is a beautiful Brother Cadfael story about the end of the Anarchy. The requester also loved Eleanor of Aquitaine, and the writer takes slight historical liberties to put them in the same fic. It's glorious and just a beautiful, beautiful coda to the Cadfael series. To me it feels like the kind of fic you would only get out of Yuletide, and I must have reread it 20 times.

Re: Kinks that are opt in/opt out

In Yuletide, anything NC-17 is probably opt-in. If you don't mention wanting sex in your letter you probably won't get anything explicit.

I've definitely written porn for Yuletide unprompted. imo, if you're asking for shipfic and not specifying a heat level, then you're implicitly requesting any and all ratings.

What makes a good letter? What should its structure be? What should it contain? What shouldn't it contain? Where do DNWs go?

Re: Kinks that are opt in/opt out

(Anonymous) 2021-10-15 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't agree. A failure to DNW any given thing is not an "implicit request" for it.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-15 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)

Things I appreciate in a letter:

  1. Clear formatting, paragraph breaks, headings. Some people go super overboard with this, but still, aesthetically pleasing and easy to read, please.
  2. DNWs are clear and specific, as unambiguous as possible
  3. A list of general likes so I can see if overall our ids align
  4. A link to how to get to the canon in question. This applies to five minute fandoms, but also in general -- if I like your letter and vibe, I might want to pick up a canon for you, and making it easy for me to check out helps.
  5. What you like about the canon -- so I can see, again, if our overall tastes align and I'm likely to produce something you like.
  6. Prompts that inspire me

What turns me off in a letter: 1. A lengthy about me. I assume people do this because there are other people out there who like it, but it is off-putting to me. 2. A really lengthy section on how thrilled, totally thrilled, in love with you they are that you're writing for them, they just love you so much.

What I will actively game away from: 1. Ranting about current events/political issues in your letter 2. Way oversharing about your identity. I will assume you have poor boundaries and are wanky.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-15 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
ugh, sorry for the formatting fail (ironic) in the latter two lists.

I also dislike judgmental DNWs. As neutral as you can manage, please. But feel free to be OTT excited about your likes, that's fun.

And fandom always follows canon, sure.

...a kick? Why?

I mean you're in a thread asking about canon gay?

A lot of people I know got put off by Whedon.

da

I can't speak for the slash/femslash discrepancy, but I fully intend to finish watching the show. Uh, someday. When I have time to binge the whole thing on one month's worth of subscription. Sometime. But I also have other things to watch for femslash where there isn't tedious het, or less of it.

Re: Canon Recs - Canon Gay TV Shows

This is the answer. A lot of people probably did watch or will watch but aren’t fannish. Those who like canon mlm prioritized watching it and somebody liked it enough to nom. The canon/fanon wlw fans didn’t bother prioritizing because it is a show for het and mlm fans. Of course a mlm fan is going to like it enough to nominate while someone who likes wlw isn’t going to bother.

Kicking up a fuss that people like gay stuff over implied lesbian or canon het feels like ‘anything with women is inherently progressive’ eat your vegetables bullshit. Shipping isn’t activism.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-15 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's vegetables/shipping-as-activism, nonnie, it's reasonable to wonder why a femslashy show had only some side m/m nominated.

Re: Canon Recs - Canon Gay TV Shows

People try to wank about this every year as if it’s new. Every year on old coal someone would be 🚨 shocked that someone nominated that mlm couple for Babysitters club.

Femslash fans who actually create femslash conent didn’t want the canon, slash fans did, casuals who apparently get upset that other fans like rare characters in rare fandoms pop up with ‘isn’t it interesting that…’
