+ 1 It would be my nightmare to be named as recognizable for this reason. If I have a “voice” that carries across fandoms then I’m doing something wrong as an author who always tries to match character voice/canon tone.

My favorite thing is when someone accidentally stumbles across one of my fics during the anon period and then when I reply during reveals they're like OMG ITS YOU. I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BECAUSE IT WAS SO IN CHARACTER/THE PLOT WAS GREAT! I’m not a BNF but I think I have a reputation for popping up in fandoms you never knew I was into and writing *the* definitive fic for those who do have an overlap in random fandoms with me, and I couldn’t ask for more.

Fandom: Ninety-Three

Characters:

Gauvain
Cimourdain
The Narrator (Victor Hugo)
The Narrator from Les Mis/Toilers who showed up to guest-write that one tower vs. guillotine chapter (also Victor Hugo)

da

I'm aiming for having a distinct writing style, so it would be a compliment to me. I also don't think "in character" and "author's own style" are mutually exclusive. I want to write dialogue in character, but I want the narration and structure to be recognizably me.

I'm excited for requests to be visible for lots of reasons, but one is that I enjoy the "rank all the requests" game so much more than the 3T1L game. It's less about criticizing the requests and more about which ones turn my personal crank.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-21 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't mind showing up in 3T1L, but the ranking game always makes me wish I could opt out.

Yeah, a lot of live action follows the characters' moods, so you can switch to a tight 3rd without changing the tone.

My point is that JS&MN, specifically, is not like this. It's a comedy of manners with wizards. For large parts of canon we're not meant to be feeling what the characters are feeling, we're meant to be a detached observer quietly laughing at their foibles. The miniseries changes some things, but not this; it basically mirrors the tone of the omniscient 3rd narration in the novel.

To capture that in a fic you'd either have to adopt 3rd omniscient yourself, in which case you can't write in OP's preferred fanficcy tight 3rd, or pick the POV of someone like Childermass who himself spends much of the story as a detached observer quietly laughing at the main characters' foibles.

(I've never thought about it before, but I wonder if that partially explains his popularity, along with Enzo Cilenti's unexpected hotness. People really dislike writing 3rd omniscient, and using Childermass is one of few ways to preserve the arch tone of canon in fic form if you're unwilling to do that.)

I will judge you if we match on the fandom with the least details in your letter and it doesn't give me enough to go on. Otherwise I don't care.

Hey, fuck you, Till We Have Faces is actually a great book /not straight

And that's a pretty huge generalization to make about Narnia fans.

Definitely the latter but so many people mention canon gay in the promo post that it just seems like the promo post is doing that already.

Ooh, there are two requests for my tiny fandom on the signup summary! But no offers yet. :(

You're absolutely right! But I find her style difficult to spot because she's not the only person who does this.

Thank you for saying this, coalie. I wholeheartedly agree. /another non-straight coalie.

Source: every time I have ever seen "this reads just like canon!" In a comment or rec over the last 22 years

I've always assumed those comments were the result of a fic occupying the overlapping space in a Venn diagram whose circles are "This fic is good," and "This fic's style is similar to canon." After all, if a fic is good but isn't stylistically similar to the book, it would feel a bit weird to comment, "This reads nothing like canon!" But that doesn't mean that good but stylistically different-from-canon fics don't exist.

I am loving the idea of MultilingYule.

I think it's more telling that she also requested Lovecraft with no acknowledgement that he was a racist bag of used fake dicks with unknown provenance.
