Homophobic misogynists are a dime a dozen; dewclaws are unique. Of course people lead with that.

+1 I saw this in the wild and read it aloud to my friend like, how would anyone even manage this?! We were baffled.

Who would you be intimidated to be assigned to?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-20 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
And why?

skazka. I love their writing so much, and it gels so perfectly with the kinds of canons they like, that I feel like anything I could write for them would just be an inferior version of whatever might be in their head. But they seem incredibly nice, which makes me a little less intimidated, thankfully.

Rhea. I've written for them before but man, my writing feels like child scribbling compared to theirs. So wonderful a person, too!

I feel like the easiest way around it would be, like, write a Jeeves fic but aim vaguely in the direction of IDK, Douglas Adams or someone.

Just write your own style? I don't see what's so hard about it. Not trying to imitate the original author's / creator's style doesn't seem like a massive effort; to the contrary!

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
But I don't have "a style"? I write in wildly different styles depending on the canon, and even when I used to write original fic, I had very different styles depending on the subject matter. Do you only have one style of prose you write?

My style has changed over the years and it's different now than it was 20 years ago, and I guess when I started out I hadn't found my voice yet and was trying out a variety of styles. But at this point, yes, my writing style is the same across fandoms unless I deliberately aim for something experimental for some reason.

That seems kind of unfortunate, honestly. Even when you write for book canons?

Re: DNW Workshop

(Anonymous) 2021-10-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What style? I don't really have one. I often subconsciously end up copying the style of whatever I've read recently. Maybe it's because I'm ESL, maybe it's just how I write in general, I don't know.

Yes. And I find fanfic that tries to imitate the writing style of the original style inherently cringy. I'm not reading (or writing) fanfic to get more of the same as the canon in terms of narration.

And I love it when I read a fic and, without regard of the fandom, I can tell that it's been written by author X because their style is distinctive rather than just some person trying to copy the style of the source material.

I'm obsessed with your spelling variation, coalie

This is where this doesn't really work as a DNW without further clarifications. If you DNW the original style, will dialogue that sounds too much like the canon character violate that (because usually the dialogue isn't naturalistic in the original canon)? Or is it only the narration that counts for the DNW?

DA

I quite like that too, but it's a bit too much to demand from a writer who may not be able to achieve that.

Oh, I agree that it's a bad / too vague DNW without clarification!

I was just confused about the "I wouldn't know how to do this / the only way to do this would be to try an imitate another writer's style".

Personally, I wouldn't count dialogue because of course I want dialogue to be in character. Dialogue is the character's voice. Narration is, largely, the author's voice.

I'm deliberately disguizing my spelling so you can't tell where I'm from, coalie.

Or I spent too long in transatlantic fandom and don't notice the difference anymore.

Re: DNW Workshop

I've been sitting on the sidelines for this one, but I feel like this is really hard for most fanfic authors to hit. I've been writing fanfiction for over fifteen years and I don't think that I would say that I have a style, other than a few minor and idiosyncratical grammatic things. When I think of authors who write in distinctive non-canon style, it's usually BNF authors. I can almost always tell an astolat fic for example. But could someone pick my work, even my original works (and I've written a fair amount by this point), out of a lineup? Probably not. And I don't think I'm a bad writer, I'm just not a GREAT writer.

For the most part, I think that all's fair in love and DNWs, but I think that this will be really hard for most lit-fandom fic writers to hit.

Narration should be heavily influenced by POV. If you write narration in exactly the same voice regardless of POV, I hope you only ever write from the POV of one character type.

I am fetishizing old-style two-white-dudes slash fic where you can tell who tops by the hair color

But they have it backwards! Everyone knows the blond bottoms!

Honestly that's the part of this letter I'm side-eying the most. Wanting old-style two-white-dudes slash fic is one thing, but imagine having such a weird, deviant preference for blond semes.

Maybe that's why she's so strident, she's had to fight hard for her genre-busting, daring, and stereotype-defying shipping preferences!

I can't find it

I would have sworn that I saw a list of 5 minute fandoms posted here, but now I can't find it. Am I imagining things, or does someone have a link?

Given Renault fandom it could be either.

Lol, MTE.
