It tends to go kind of quiet in the early-to-mid creation period. It'll pick up again whenever pinch hits go out or the deadline starts looming.

Drabble is 100 words, ficlets tend to be vignettes rather than a whole story, a fic tries to give at least a whole scene, if not a plot

Opposite question: fic length

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you like getting long fic or is it too overwhelming?

Re: Opposite question: fic length

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, nah. I like 'em on the shorter side. Anything over 3 or 4k starts to feel like a slog to me.

Canon-blind sign-up reviewer, are you by any chance Capslock Title Coalie? I feel like I recognize your swagger. (if so, welcome back! I will probably call on you for help when I'm at titling stage.)

Both.

Explain? Please?

The longer the better, I say. I've never been overwhelmed and can comment quickly.

ODAO longfic would suck there's more of a chance I can just skim and pick a line and have it seem like I read it. ODAO shortfic is worse only because it doesn't seem they even put in effort/were passionate. If you were gonna do ODAO that was short you may as well have just written what I asked for. (I don't believe in the idea of "I'd rather a passionate ODAO than a soulless exactly what I asked for". Give me exactly what I asked for every time, even if you don't have the skills or passion.)

Newbie advice

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
If you could give one piece of advice to a Yuletide newbie, what would it be?

Don't fuck up.

It's both exciting and overwhelming. I like to read and comment early, so it's a lot more to read and comment on in a short period of time.

Thanks

re: and if you don’t like longfic as a gift, what would you say is “too long”?/whats your ideal gift fic length (assuming everything else is covered: it addresses one of your prompts, good writing, no DNWs, etc.)

Don't overthink it! Just respect the DNWs, and fuck the coal mine quibblin'.

butt monkey? nope

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
OH BLEAAAARGH. I just had this dream I'd finished and posted my Yuletide fic... and woke up to find I haven't even started it yet. :/

Trust your own judgement. I mean, yes, if you're unsure of something, ask and try to get a consensus. But, sometimes your gut is right and coal is wrong.

Signed, coalie who asked about including a stealth crossover and was told "No, for the love of god, don't do it!" did it anyway and it was probably my biggest YT hit.

I used to have a cat named Butt Monkey.

Usually 5-8k is the sweet spot on "long" fic. You get multiple scenes and an arc for the characters that way but most people can read a fic of that length in an hour or so so it can be consumed in one sitting.

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
If your recip says, "I'll love anything for these characters" they mean something somewhat canon compliant, not scatplay toddlercon.

I agree with this. When you start getting into the 5 figure word counts, I just can't.

Re: Opposite question: fic length

(Anonymous) 2021-10-28 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Long fic is the dream for me. I will be happy to get any length story but the longer it is, the more I get to sink into and really feel like a story is being told. For shorter stories, I often (although not always) feel like the story is rushed.
