My answer is the same. Unless they're literally playing themselves, usually they're a character and not "Hi it's me Elton John, playing Elton John, singing about my exact life as we know it happened." They're always a cheerleader or some everage joe and not the literal documentary version of themselves.

you're asking about k-pop, right? if it's k-pop, keep an eye on the letters. you could write it either way, but sometimes people prompt things based on the idols.

Also if the tagset has "X's character," you have carte blanche to write whatever you want without knowing the idol.

Crossover Etiquette Question

Hi coalies,

I have a question about letter etiquette. I'm requesting a really small fandom – we're talking no-fics-at-all small. Because of its setting, it would be an easy crossover with a pretty big fandom (8k+ fics). I was thinking of putting in my letter that I'd welcome a crossover with Big Fandom if my author is interested – I'd hope that might catch the attention of someone who's in Big Fandom, especially if my letter ends up going out as a pinch hit. What do you all think? Is it within Yuletide etiquette to do that, and is it a good idea?

Just like with Marvel and SW, when it comes to get megafandoms in, people's creativity knows no bounds. I kind of admire them, ngl. And if the mods say it's cool, then it's cool.

4th Man Out and Handsome Devil both have canon gay characters but not really gay relationships (except minor ones) they're both more friendship movies

Tbh I'm inclined to think most of the Star Wars stuff that got in this year is extremely fair – the High Republic books are set hundreds of years before the prequels with an entirely different cast (except for Yoda) and there are basically no fics for them. The Visions episodes, too, have no character overlap with the rest of canon. Especially since Yuletide allowed rare pairings in its very first round, it seems very true to the spirit of Yuletide to allow isolated corners of broader megafandoms.

Should I, Jedi have made it? Perhaps not...but c'est la vie.

I think it’s ok to offer that as a prompt (as long as it is still mainly and clearly about your fandom, not big fandom) but I would make sure to include other options. On a purely subjective level, I think it’s better if it’s a fusion (i.e. set at Hogwarts), rather than “what if X characters from my fandom are on the run from Voldemort and cross paths with Harry, Hermione and Ron?”, but that’s a preference, not Yuletide gospel.

I loved where we are gonna be years from now by duckgirlie from 2018 (Handsome Devil, Conor/Ned) it was really clear the author was writing from very specific experience of the canon setting/the fic setting but it managed to toe the line where it didn't feel like she was throwing in a bunch of stuff just to prove how well she knew it

It's fine as long as you offer other prompts, and it's obvious you aren't only angling for the crossover, I put in at least a couple crossover prompts every year.

You might want to mention if you're ok with other crossovers, so it looks less like you're angling just to sneak in Large Fandom.

Any recs for shorter length canons with canon f/f (or at very least highly likely to get f/f prompts) (by shorter I mean anything from five minute fandoms to stand-alone films, no tv or book series)

Shang-Chi is a standalone film with a strong f/f pairing that already has at least one request. It's not canon but there is a lot of flirting and no canon ships for either character.

My third Yuletide, I had a lot of stress going on IRL, and I matched on a canon that was perfect for channeling every feeling I had about hope in difficult times and the support of a community. My recipient loved it and came back years later to tell me it still made them cry. I'm so proud of it and all the flashes of associated memory (days sitting on the couch typing feeling like I was becoming symbiotically bonded to that darn couch, bouncing a plot idea off my mother, post-it notes everywhere) make me smile.
