The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

Based on what ffa dug up, it really looks like this is a person who's obsessed with one specific character and has gamed exchanges for her before. But I'm sure they were also planning to pad offers.

DC

I feel like if you're padding offers it would make more sense to have three fake fandoms to provide absolute certainty. (I dunno, maybe I'm wrong, but my gut says 'rabidly monofannish about one fandom and one fandom only' feels more likely to me than someone willing to write two but going to lengths this elaborate to avoid adding more, unless the two are related fandoms. Just has 'laser-focused on one thing and completely unwilling to be flexible or just opt out of participating' vibes to me.) Of course, I guess there could always be a third fake fandom that looked convincing enough to slip through the net without the mods querying it...

I'd (mostly) unironically offer Winterblumensaat if Siwwwwwa or whoever actually requested it. It's a pretty title and all 55 words they wrote for it give you a surprising amount to work with for an original fiction piece.

I mean, FFA RPF has been a thing in past Yuletides, so I'd think Coaltide RPF with Butts Coalie as a character would be a completely legit nomination, though arguably a wank magnet.

And now that I think about it, if you're unmatchable based on your offers, don't you have to add more to participate in the exchange?

Yeah. Either that, or bow out. I think generally speaking, a lot of people who might be monofannish on the reading side would still be able to crank out something for another fandom they know if that meant they'd get their fix.

Yeah, but you only need one matchable fandom, and most people can manage that in Yuletide one way or another. Four matchable fandoms is harder. (If this is the person it probably is, their fandom isn't incredibly rare, just their fave character is, so they might even be able to match on that one as long as most of their offers were also fake.)

Re: Canon Recs – fated slashy task/journey

I'm looking for canons in any media where male character A, of a high social class, is designated a hero and has to go on a long journey or perform an extremely dangerous task for reasons not totally within his own control. He is accompanied/aided by male character B who is of a lower social class and is devoted to A to the point of disregarding his own safety on numerous occasions. The stress of the task, or associated supernatural factors, mean that A is either self-destructive, horrible to B, totally out of it, a danger to everyone around him, or all of these things. Bonus if at least one of them dies at the end.

You've read both Lord of the Rings and Eagle of the Ninth, right?

Nominate them as a character from Winterblumensaat, might as well fill out the cast of these fake fandoms

The shit you have me googling sometimes, coal, I swear. I thought there was no way this guy was in a goofy little club, that he must have just been part of a one-off 4chan photoshop prank thread or something, so I looked it up and omg in his apology to the dictionary he calls himself a founding member of the Annoy Club. You start a secret community to spread misinformation all over the internet and you call it WHAT?? The levels of dweebery on display are astounding!

I guess I won't roll my eyes at the contrived 'n edgy evil organization names in fiction anymore — at least they're TRYING.

The first rule of Annoy Club is we do not have a good name for Annoy Club.

Five minute fandom is asking for someone to offer it. Obscure out of print German book is a great choice, there's just no need to invent one instead of choosing some actual ones. As it is they're now running high chances of someone writing for their fake fandom (I'm certainly considering treating for it)

Both titles are so pretentious and LitFicc-y that you should totally write a nonlinear plot in 2nd person POV with magical realism and an ambiguous ending.

Most importantly, use either the sun or the winter flower seeds (depending on which one you write for) as metaphors, but leave it up to the reader to decide what the metaphor stands for.

A question for the coal hivemine from the coading realm, especially for those who use the Everything app: what do coalies feel an equitable use of donations looks like?

The app solicits for donations once yearly if Yuletide breaks past free hosting limits. Up until this year, it's always been a no-brainer decision - the combined cost of ALL exchange apps used to be nearly nothing. Paypal took a cut, then server costs were paid, I took a Treat Yo'self portion, and everything else went to charity.

This year, the Everything App has changed things. Due to the feature set + lots of data, the auto app will cost money every month into perpetuity. For transparency: each month that's $10 for the database, $7 for some hosting features, and a few dollars for burst traffic. The extra hosting features could be nixed, but that takes away the server being always up (users would have to awkwardly wait for spinup sometimes) and I'd be unable to debug easily. Human-factors-wise, time/effort goes into upkeep and new work.

What does the hivemine think should be done with donations this year? 100% to server fees, since there will always be more from now on? A small amount for the coadie? Some other split between coadie/fees/charity?

(This feels kinda weird to ask, but it would feel equally weird not to? The major constituency which donates is coal. One way or another, I'll keep the app up for the foreseeable future.)
