If you're going to deliberately sign up without details please instead put "No DNW, write whatever the fuck you want".

B, the letters are when we'll have some real meat to talk about, so it should be a fresh post.

That should be the default optional details on all sign ups. You can't delete it unless you replace it with something.

Yes! When I'm writing for an exchange, I love being able to see my recipient talk about what they love about the requested canon and characters, so I like to do my author the same courtesy.

Another new anon - tbh if I get only DNWs my brain laatches on to the only info I have, i get bunnied real hard by one even if I'd never wanted to write it before, that's the only thing I'm passionate about now so you get bland rehash instead.

And your detailed DNW list is either stuff we both hate - so now I'm going into reading your prompts feeling icky all over - or stuff you hate but I love, so now I"m going into your prompts feeling vaguely frustrated at you - or stuff I've never considered before, so now I'm more interested in that than the prompts. None is ideal!

The tl;dr does tend to imply that the problem was that the writer didn't like m/m, which is untrue; I suspect it's more that the person who got run over by an ambulance is a [possibly implied to be neo-Nazi] terrorist.

Still not good! Could still have just not offered the terrorist! But I don't think it was a het vs. slash thing, I think it was a "does not ship villains" thing.

Villain or not, b_o still took a request for slash, turned it into het, and killed half the requested pairing. Sorry if people ~misunderstood~ that it's not slash she doesn't like, it's villains!

Also, it's fucking Hans Gruber from Die Hard. Terrorist, definitely. Neo-Nazi is a reach.

It was a request for slash and/or gen with canon het, she wrote the canon het. Like the shipping is not the problem here, it's the gleeful murder of the favorite character, and it's weird that coal always talks about it like it's the shipping. if she'd written it as hateslash and still gleefully run the guy over, requester would probably still have been (rightfully) upset.)

(Which I guess is another reason to point out that elaborate DNW lists don't fix things like this - she would almost certainly have respected a no het DNW. And still gleefully run him over.)

Would including something like a shortlist of tropes they like be enough to offset the DNWs?

Writing. I've done Yuletide for 17 years now, and it has become one of my holiday traditions. Specifically, trying to write fic that makes people happy. I always write treats, I spend a great deal of time on each story, I pick up at least one new fandom, and I love the excitement and stress of the last few weeks before fic reveals as people frantically try to finish treats and cheer each other on.

I also try to comment widely. I am multifannish to an extreme and Yuletide often brings out canons that I've never thought to look for fic but am eager to read when I see it. I want to make authors happy, too, and it brings me great joy to comment.

Mine too and I had to take a moment when I realized it's been that long.

My brother died Christmas Eve, and the last seven Yuletides have been an excellent distraction from missing him as the end of the year comes along. Plus he loved fandom, and Yuletide reminds me the good times we had talking all sorts of different fannish things.

DA: for me, yes (although the longer and more elaborate the DNWs, the more likes I'd rather see.) But like a couple lines of DNWs + one or two really general likes or even a one-word prompt would be a lot better than only DNWs.

The other thing with only DNWs and no likes is that not having likes can make it really hard to interpret the less specific DNWs. i.e., if you DNW darkfic but mention you like h/c, I at least have a vague idea that you don't mind a few painful things happening to the characters as long as they get a happy ending. If all I have is the DNW darkfic I will probably just write you the boringest of fluff.

For John McClane, Hans Gruber with a "Holly isn’t on my list of characters in the prompt, but I’d love it if she was at least mentioned. Blank sign-ups on purpose are sort of mean, but I'd be fine with only getting characters, DNWs, and favorite tropes. I've certainly written assignments with less information to go on than that.

I'm also leaning toward no letter this year, though not as a social experiment. My plan was to be pretty descriptive in the sign-up itself. I don't even use the letter post for treats anymore, since all of the sign-ups are released into the wild after assignments are out and I've never been one of those people who writes treats before my assignment is done.
