The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

This is me. I love this point of the exchange, where I'm deciding on fandoms and writing letters and waiting to see what gets requested, but my interest dwindles as time goes on and there isn't new information or anything to sustain me. And then my interest comes back in the last few weeks as the deadline approaches and gifts are given and reveals happen.

What did you mean to nom for Yuletide but you completely forgot to and now you're desperately hoping someone out there was more put together than you?

...Me. It's me. I forgot to nominate The Binding by Bridget Collins and I'm sad about it.

Meeee. I forgot Deathloop. D:

The wiki's been taken down. I think they're working on building another at https://test.ffa.wiki/, though.

Re: Canon Recs - books?

Depending on the historical era(s) you're interested in, you might really like the Templar Knight Mysteries series by Maureen Ash! Superb detail on the historical setting and excellent found family. The books are pretty short and can be read totally independently of one another. IMO the first two books – The Alehouse Murders and Death of a Squire – are the best. Warnings for period-typical (late 12th/early 13th century England) Islamophobia and antisemitism.

I thought I didn't need to nominate The Bone Key this year, but then I reread some old fic and no, I definitely needed to. :(

I'm holding out hope someone else nominated it, but rereading last year's letter made me want HBO Perry Mason.

Re: You can't believe it's still eligible for YT

I don't think Gideon will make it. It's now over, even with filters & discounting the couple of crossovers that just use the worldbuilding or are multi-fandom durable anthologies. I haven't seen anyone who nominated it post that it's already been approved for them so the mods haven't gotten to it yet (i.e. at a time before it tipped over the line) or already rejected it.

I actually had the same thing happened to me. I did check FFN and unless I did the filtering wrong on AO3 it should have come out to around 950 fics.

I’m not terribly bothered by it though.

Participant Watch

What people are you going to be looking out for when signups open?

Are they users who only come around this time of year? Area specialists? Writers who do bonkers things?

Writers who do bonkers things FOR SURE. That is one of my favorite parts of yuletide haha. There are always people doing weird stuff and I live for it.

Different coalie, but these books sound super RTMI - thanks for the rec, I'll check them out. Are the books slashy at all?

(Anonymous) 2021-10-04 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
This post is so confusing to me. If you're invested enough in yuletide to be a mod/mod adjacent, of course you also go on coal, or at least keep tabs on it to monitor how your policies are received!

I always keep an eye out for writers that have treated me in the past. I hope our fandoms and interests align again so I can return the favor!

I'm really hoping that the Rhetorical Exercises get approved and we see some magic for it

(Anonymous) 2021-10-04 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you check crossovers on FF.net? There a little tricky to find.

ayrt

Not even a little bit, I'm afraid – no significant romance at all, in fact. I hope that's not a dealbreaker!

Same, I got such a perfect fic last year, I really hope they ask for something I know.

Birds of prey (movie), if it's even eligible. Fingers crossed that it is and was boomed by someone else!

(Anonymous) 2021-10-04 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't watch Los Espookys until noms had ended, and I regret that. I loved it!

Oh, link? I’ve been thinking about watching that, and a good letter can often prod me to pick something up.

Oh, I was actually talking about my own letter XD Here's an impromptu two truths and a lie, Perry Mason edition, from letters I bookmarked to treat last year:
