The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

Don't feel too bad. It's an awkward lesson to learn but they really needed to learn it, and there were a lot of warnings about how this isn't how you nominate.

or maybe they nominated the same fandom and thought that was how you were supposed to do the data entry.

You can't have harry potter for yuletide, either

I thought I would be disappointed after nominations ended but instead I'm still just relieved

Yes, we've talked about this at length already.

Yep, I discovered that after I posted the comment

The first three anonfails aren't bad at all, they're just funny.

The last one I can't tell if it's bad or not because I don't understand what conversation is even happening

name the fandoms, at least, if you can't name the person!

someone wrote a DNW fic. coal caught it and called it out

morbane, who is on coal, or one of the other mods somehow caught wind if this wank (either from coal or the recip complained) and rather than solicit a APH they let the author edit it

the author edited it in a way that still hit the DNW if you knew the fandom but wasnt so blatant

coalies complained about this and were like wow i hope the mods told off the author at least since they did nothing to help the recip. why do mods always side with bad faith authors rather than assisting good faith recips????

morbane anonfailed while playing devils advocate/mod sympathizer in saying that the mods can’t do anything because the author sucks and woe poor recips. even though we know the mods therefore knew the DNW fix had not been real and could still have tried to get them a APH and/or banned the recip for breaking the rules twice by writing a DNW and lying to the mods about fixing it

huh, i could've sworn that was still a thing. i see it every time a hippo request goes up

Why and How You Participate In Yuletide

(Anonymous) 2021-10-02 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
This topic came up on ffa recently (stale meme I know) and I wanted coal’s opinion.

Do you care more about writing or reciving? Do you care more about writing the fic of someone’s heart or your own idea? Why do you (or don’t you) sign up?

I enjoy writing most because it’s the part I can control. A bad gift can’t ruin my exchange that way. I don’t need deadlines so I can treat without signing up fine, but I only like writing to other peoples prompts so I treat widely rather than writing on my own outside of exchanges. 99% of my fics I never would have written had someone else not requested or prompted for it. I love the feeling of knowing I hit exactly what they were hoping for or suprised them with something they never dreamed of by taking an interesting approach with a generic prompt.

The reason why I sign up rather than PH or treating only is because I want fic in fandoms I am not comfortable writing in. Usually my fandoms are so small that if I don't request then nobody will, or the people who do want stuff I wouldn't want to read if that's what their gift was. If the gift I get sucks then :( but I usually get treats and my main gifts are pretty good to great, so there’s an incentive even if theres a risk of a dud. I also make the letters I wish to recieve, so knowing that someone else possibly enjoyed their Yuletide thanks to being able to cater a fic to my heart’s ideal is the icing on top of the goodfic cake.

This is the first thing I've read that has ever made me want to check out the discord lol

yeah that definitely still happens

I sign up purely because I want to get fic to spec. I hate writing with all my soul and never do it except for exchanges.

It's a confluence of a lot of things:

- I am genuinely mostly just into small and rare fandoms
- I hardly write anything these days (am a fandom/fanfic elder, very prolific in former years) and I still do maybe two or three exchanges a year because that actually makes me write stuff when otherwise I will likely write zero stuff
- I do like receiving fic written to my taste, but it's such a toss up that my expectations are never high, and if I win the exchange lottery, that's cool
- yuletide is an institution as much as a regular fic exchange at this point, it's a part of my own fannish history, so the nostalgia factor, and the yearly routine of it all (oh it's that time of year again! time to get my yuletide on!) is a big part of the appeal
- like this is my (holy shit really?) 17th year in a row participating
- the holidays are stressful; yuletide is an investment but the stakes are low and it is a nice distraction from RL stuff
- honestly I don't even know what I would do with myself in the back third of the year if I wasn't devoting a significant amount of time to yuletide and coal and associated activities, discussions, and drama, so yep here I am again, I will be doing this until I die or yuletide dies tbh

i love writing fic to spec so i hope we share fandoms, but have you ever done an auction or ask your fav authors if they take commissions? seems easier* and more reliable

* unless you’re broke, which same

Broke as a joke, work is the only thing I hate more than writing. It's a rough life. I was made to lie about on a lounge eating bonbons whilst commissioning poets yet, alas, here I am instead.

me and write you commission-worthy fic forever!

+1 to all of this. Except 17 years because holy hell that is impressive. This is my 12th!

I appreciate that yuletide forces me to write. I kind of internally grumble about it when I start but I'm always happy that I did it.
