The Coalies Are Back In Town

Friday night they'll be dressed to kill
Down at Coaltide Bar'n'Grill
The receipts will flow and wank will spill
And if the coalies wanna fight, you better let 'em
That jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song
The nights are getting longer, it won't be long
Won't be long 'til Yuletide comes
Now that the coalies are here again

Elemental Logic Series by Laurie J Marks has an f/f canon main couple

Same, and like the anon above me, I also have no memory of how I originally found _coal...

Nope. Primarily a coalie who wishes it were year round. I lurk on FFA but never engage.

Plenty of people hate FFA

Re: old faves or all new?

I don't have enough fandoms to switch them around, and I can never get enough fic for my prompts. And frankly, I don't care. If you don't want to write for me, default. I'm done stressing over exchanges. I have enough stress irl already.

Me! I'll also throw in a request for tentacle porn.

What for?

Re: old faves or all new?

For me as a writer, the only thing is that I usually write you the only idea I had based on your whole letter. I mix and match prompts/likes and it’s very rare that someone has multiple prompts that hit me in the MUST WRITE arena. (And when they do, I write them more than one gift.)

If I see you again with the same letter, I game away/don’t treat. It’s not a stress-for-you thing, it’s a stress-for-me thing. If your pool of writers is big and you consistently get fic you like based off those prompts, you are set and shouldn’t change. If you regularly languish as a PH, don’t get (m)any treats, or wish X would write for you again, refreshing your letter may be useful in case your pool of writers is like me.

How Likely Are People to Read Smut Anon on AO3?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-21 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a very dark, smutty story that is not my usual kind of thing. Usually when I post smut, I archive-lock it so that it can't escape into the wild, because I've had a (non-smut, thankfully) story accidentally get linked into real world google searches, and the resulting comments weren't great.

So for this dark, smutty story, I initially placed it in the anon com, so that I wouldn't need to archive-lock it, so nonnies could read, but also if it escaped to google it wouldn't be linked to my name. But I kinda want to claim it and archive-lock it.

So, how common is it that people read smut while logged out of the archive, and that archive-locking it would kill it for you?

I think the majority of people who read smut don’t care. The only time anon stories are avoided are usually in fandoms that are wanky (hockey fandom used to have spitefics gifted to people outside of exchanges just to troll), or have a lot of antis or have newbiews who don’t trust anon.

That said, it sounds like you may as well sock up?

Like several others, I found coal first. I think because someone complained about it in chat? Or the official com? Back in the first year, when people were "think of the children!"-ing over coal.

I've visited FFA occasionally during the year when Coal isn't around, but I find that it moves so quickly that everyone's moved on to the next post 2 seconds into a conversaion, or before answering a question.

Why? I've tried but their exchange threads are a nightmare.

+1 to the coalie above me's suggestion that a sock might be best for what you want here (unless by "claim it" you specifically mean you want the fic under your regular AO3 name)

If I'm reading anything, I'm logged in. So, an author suddenly archive-locking their fic has/would never affect me. And I'd think most coalies have AO3 accounts so locked-fic wouldn't be a barrier, but idk how many people read AO3 (smut or otherwise) without accounts. This might be a question better suited for a place that has more AO3 readers-only vs AO3 users/readers.

I'm an ffa regular and have been since before _coal, but I don't think I found out about _coal from ffa. I think I stumbled across reference to it in somewhere DW post I was reading.

JunZhe evidence post?

(Anonymous) 2021-09-21 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Can someone explain to me this fandom? https://yuletide-admin.dreamwidth.org/84490.html?thread=1679370#cmt1679370

I feel really dumb, but this seems like a totally ineligible fandom. Am I crazy?

Oh how coal has changed, lol. In the past the suggestion that someone would do an all-incest sign-up would have been wanked about for days, not considered, as the nonny above me puts it, just "potentially a little rude".

Nonny, request what your heart wants, but absolutely give the platonic gen options you'd enjoy too. Most people don't want to go ODAO - and no judgment meant by this, but most people signing up for Yuletide won't want to write incest.

Re: Worldbuilding is go!

(Anonymous) 2021-09-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's strange to add worldbuilding as an option and not give a definition - unless the Yuletide mods have added one and I've missed it? Everyone who posts about it seems to have a different definition of what worldbuilding is - from basically "any fic that fills in a canon gap" to canon characters only, to OCs only, to focusing specifically on the world with no/minimal character interactions ...

I have come to the conclusion that all fics are worldbuilding fics, because they all contain the canon world and add something extra to it by virtue of existing.

I think plenty of people will read smut logged in, but if it's the kind of thing someone might not want to admit to reading, they're more likely to *feedback* anon - weird smut gets a much higher anon kudos ratio.

(Anonymous) 2021-09-21 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
BEAST appears to be an official AU of the main series, so I can see why they might think its eligible. If you only consider fics tagged with the various BEAST tags, it does seem to come under the limit. Does it actually differ enough to count, though?

Re: Is everyone here from FFA?

No, and it annoys me that titled threads have become the norm over the coaltide years.

Re: JunZhe evidence post?

I think the implication is that the "fandom" in question is a sort of a metaverse of "every couple played by these two actors is in some sense the same couple, like multiversal dopplegangers or reincarnating souls", maybe? And I guess that specific conceit does not have all that many fics. But I agree that this still seems ineligible. It's too vaguely delineated for me and a lot of the parts seem to be highly popular and ineligible pairings on their own merits.

Re: JunZhe evidence post?

nc

If it's a metaverse with reincarnation or doppelgangers they could have explained it a lot better. Tt just feels like migratory slash fandom to me, tbh. Or those crossover "fandoms" like Superwholock or Rise of the Guardians/Frozen/How to Train Your Dragon that got popular on tumblr.

Huh. Was it Jack Frost/Elsa because Ice Powers? How did they make the timelines match up with HTTYD?
