coaltide | COALTIDE Episode IV: A New Hope

It is a period of indecision.
Gaming gone right for some,
coalies successfully snagging
the assignment they wanted,
the first major hurdle against
Yuletide odds is a victory.

However for those not as lucky
to have gotten the recipient they
wanted, coalies can't help but
think about the hidden requests,
missed bullet and gem alike,
they now have to wait months
to get access to.

Haunted by these assignments that
could have been, or perhaps
mourning the gaming attempt that
went awry, coalies tell themselves
that they will get started on their
assignment right away so that they can
treat to their hearts content and
restore happiness to the Yuletide galaxy....

I'm probably the wrong person to do this because I don't ship either Ransom/Marta or Benoit/Marta. But pretending that I actually do, and otherwise going by my personal preferences, here's how I'd break it down:

disembler: Letter is complete. Clear and flexible about ships. Points for requesting Lt. Elliott and offering Benoit/Elliot or Benoit/Marta or gen as options. I would like a few more specific prompts but the general likes are fine. I probably won't get to it but it's on my potential treating list.

Minim Calibre: Marta and Harlan request, DNW Marta/Harlan, with no real details in the signup apart from what they don't want. If I were just judging on the app, this would be a hard pass, because there's no letter linked. However, I happen to have their letter already bookmarked from the letter post, and I liked it - some solid Marta & Harlan prompts. I personally like this one; hope the mods are going to pass along their letter to their writer, though. https://minim-calibre.dreamwidth.org/869484.html

laulan: This probably doesn't deserve to be this high on its own merits, because the letter is a WIP and the signup has no DNWs... but I also really love Marta, so a request for just her and what she does next is my jam. Bookmarked to check back.

sunsetmog: Marta/Ransom d/s with Marta in the dom position isn't my personal cup of tea, but I respect the hell out of the request. Also appreciate the permission to kill off family members and the fact that the requester migrated to DW after initially having a Google Doc.

ImpalaChick: Letter is complete. It contains video embeds which I know is not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm fine with it. Good request for Ransom alone. Clear likes/dislikes and - miracle of miracles - some really solid fandom-specific prompts. I appreciate this one.

SunriseMagpie: Objectively, this one deserves to be way lower down - it's a request for Benoit and Marta where Benoit/Marta is DNW'd in all caps, which would be a slap in the face to someone who offered the characters hoping to write shipfic. But I like some of their specific prompts. While it's not an objectively good request, the prompts are intriguing to me, and I'm all about those prompts.

SmartBuckley: Solid ship request, is clear about wanting ship but gives a gen out. Lots of solid shippy prompts of the sort I like. If I shipped this, I'd be here for this one.

spacecadet72: Similar to the request above - solid shipfic request, gives prompts of the sort I like, wish I shipped it but I don't.

FictionPenned: Fine request. I do wish they clearly said they ship it - I assume they do but I always get a little paranoid about being 21 Jump Street'd. I'd prefer more canon-specific prompts but there's a lot of general likes and I could totally work with this.

Jen_814: Request for just Benoit, no letter. Clear request for more about the character, which I could work with.

felix814: Request for just Benoit, no letter. Clear request. Gen from another POV about canon we already watched is never my thing but I could work with this as an assignment and they do prompt future adventures.

DesdemonaKaylose: No letter, short prompts. I wish they'd clarify if they want shipfic, but I love "Any further mystery or gothic elements in the fic" being a request so I'm actually more likely to consider treating this one because that is my jam.

woodenpicador: Request for Marta and Meg, likes Marta/Meg, no other details. I appreciate the clear direction on the ship but I'd want some prompts or general likes to treat here.

withinmelove: Solid prompts and clear shipping preferences. However, this is a request for four characters, with prompts that only involve 1-3 of those characters, without permission in the signup to leave characters off. Their letter lists off seven characters and then says you don't have to use all seven, which ??? IDK. Probably not one I'd write for unless their prompts blew me away, which they didn't.

opinionhaver69: Any request where the only detail is a wacky Christmas scenario where Ransom wears that sweater again. I should hate it but I do like this scenario. Rated low for putting their author in a bad situation and the use of Any, but honestly, I've seen worse.

captainellie: Letter is a placeholder. Their likes are interesting but most of them are shippy. I assume they ship their two requested characters, but without a letter, I can't confirm. Pass.

something different: Request for Marta, Benoit, and Ransom with no optional details at all. Hard pass.

angie13: Letter is a placeholder. They say they're open to pre-canon fic with Marta and Harlan chilling, but they've requested Ransom and Benoit as well, and they don't give the author permission to leave out characters, so you'd need to email through the mods to write that. Hard pass.

riverlight: Opening your Yuletide signups with saying you dislike the canon is a bold look. Following it up by mis-spelling the name of one of your requested characters and DNWing a murdering sociopath being a sociopath? This is the request I dodged, friends.

Count me in as someone who loves Minim Calibre's letter!
