COALTIDE Episode IV: A New Hope
It is a period of indecision.
Gaming gone right for some,
coalies successfully snagging
the assignment they wanted,
the first major hurdle against
Yuletide odds is a victory.
However for those not as lucky
to have gotten the recipient they
wanted, coalies can't help but
think about the hidden requests,
missed bullet and gem alike,
they now have to wait months
to get access to.
Haunted by these assignments that
could have been, or perhaps
mourning the gaming attempt that
went awry, coalies tell themselves
that they will get started on their
assignment right away so that they can
treat to their hearts content and
restore happiness to the Yuletide galaxy....
Assignments out: between 26 & 28 October

Re: Preference Rating Game - Scholomance
(Anonymous) 2020-10-27 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)1 kitsunerei88 - Right off the bat, I like this letter a lot. It reads as a very self-aware YT letter, and the introduction is polite and reassuring. The Likes list is of decent size, and even though none of our general likes seem to overlap much, their romance ones certainly appeal to me. I’d happily keep reading the letter specifically with an eye out for romance requests. Their dislikes and DNWs are totally workable even if all are considered as DNWs. They don’t want hurt no comfort, but it seems like they they’d be fine with bittersweetness and a good ending, which is great for me. Fandom section is short but useful. The tone of this letter somehow comes off as really soothing and relaxed, which is very appealing. Not many prompts considering they request Any, but at least they cover all characters. As an assignment, I might be disappointed that they want just backstory fic for solo characters, but they do genuinely seem interested in them all. If it were an assignment, I’d happily write them some El/Orion romance fic, and would be glad to treat the same.
2 Macdragon - Mixed feelings about the intro. The first paragraph has a good amount of Likes, and the DNWs seem straightforward. But why include external links with tiermakers? I wish they’d included all these likes in a bulleted list, and the dislikes + DNW as DNWs in the main letter. Annoying to have 3 tabs open just to brainstorm. At least our likes overlap quite a bit. Another minor inconvenience is that although they include links to their mini challenge signups, they’re linking to the parent thread instead of their own replies. Again, not a huge issue, but it’s annoying enough that it would deter me from treating unless I really loved one of their prompts. The fandom section is short, but fine. They give a few likes as well as cool prompts, and what they want seems to be in line with canon, which is nice. Only issue if it was an assignment is they request Any, but don’t have at least 1 prompt specific to each of the characters in the tagset. Would be unlikely to treat, but would be fine with it as an assignment, unless I was wanting character-specific prompts.
3 teethandstars - For the most part, I like this letter. Their introduction is short but sweet and succinct. The DNW list is super workable even if their dislikes are also all considered as DNWs. They DNW fluff, which initially made me uncomfortable because it’s a broad category, but it’s perfectly ok by because they don’t DNW angst. No needles to thread at all. As a matter of fact, they like angst. And gosh, is their likes list perfectly RMTI. I would be more than excited to write some angst with a happy ending, pining, getting together, or navigating a new relationship. The Likes list is of good size, which is great because the fandom section is relatively tiny. Even though it’s small, it comes off as enthusiastic and has a nice collection of prompts, albeit few. I’m a bit wary of writing a ship based on that they want El to be the focus (how does one define focus, exactly?), but they do seem genuinely interested in the ships they request. The gen prompts aren’t too interesting to me. Wouldn’t be unhappy to get as an assignment, but wouldn’t want to treat.
4 Runespoor: Awfully formatted big Likes list. The list would be ok as an assignment, because more likes given means it’s more likely our preferences overlap (and they kind of do). But as a treater, not inclined to parse them just to find something. They don’t seem to be categorized, either. I would divide them into General, Relationship, and Smut Likes (the last of which they have separate, albeit unlabeled). But hey, their DNWs are clear… until you get to the fandom-specific sections. Would be helpful if they had all DNWs in one place. They also DNW fluff & WAFF as well as bleak unhappiness, which kind of irritates me - all are fairly unspecific DNWs. Just DNW sad endings, maybe? Fandom section is enthusiastic, but they seem to want worldbuilding (also the safest-looking route). Rationally, I know they’d like with angst with a happy end because they say they would, but the focus on defining fluff/schmoop/WAFF stresses me. Worldbuilding isn’t my strong suit, but they have a great collection of prompts. Wouldn’t treat, would be just ok with as an assignment.
5 charlietinpants - The letter intro seems very sweet, and the likes list is totally workable from a technical aspect. The only big problem is that they dislike angst as well as hurt/comfort. I wouldn’t feel comfortable writing anything but fluffy curtainfic if I got this as an assignment, and 1k words of pure fluff without any hint of bittersweetness don’t come easy to me. If I did treat, it would be a short fluff fic posted to Madness. Still, considering their dislikes as well as DNWs as all DNWs would be fairly easy - at least there are no apparent contradictions in them. I wouldn’t write smut because they seem to want vanilla, which can be different for everyone. It would be helpful to see smut-specific likes. But I don’t write smut anyway, so it’s a personal non-issue. I am very fine with their fandom section even if it’s miniscule. They say what they like without giving prompts, which is ok because I actually get a good general idea of what they’re into based on all the likes. I’d be rather stressed to get this as a main assignment, but could actually consider a short treat.
6 Surreptitiously - The Likes and DNW lists are short enough that the lack of bullet points doesn’t make them hard to parse. Nitpick is that the “tropey aus that aren’t the most obvious” is uh, not obvious for me, so I’d avoid any AUs except the 3 examples they give. I do kind of wish they gave more likes, especially since they say they dig romance, and I want to know what they like in romance as opposed to genfic. None of their listed likes really strikes inspiration in me as a treater, but if it was an assignment, I could force myself try to include at least one of them. Their DNWs I like more than their likes. Short, not contrary, and specific. Unfortunately, the tone of the fandom section is very adolescently twee and makes me cringe. It’s extremely off-putting how they call El their daughter and then call both characters babies just because they’re underage. It’s fine that they don’t want smut, but the ways they’re referring to the characters makes me squirm. Would be unhappy with as an assignment because our likes don’t overlap, wouldn’t treat due to the same.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-27 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)I agree, they're very cute and appealing! \o/ It's just easier for me to miss important stuff when it's not all in one place. (But I confess, I've been secretly wanting my own set of tiermakers after seeing these!)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-27 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I love that sort of thing! Like all those old myspace quizzes--super fun to do yourself, kind of boring to read other peoples' after the first time you see it.
