Writing THE fic in a fandom
(Anonymous) 2020-10-15 03:24 am (UTC)(link)2. Do you still write in the fandom or are you one and done?
3. If your fic is the only one in the fandom AND only one person requests it...will you write for it again? Was that your one good idea/the only prompt of theirs that worked for you? Do you feel like you can’t top that fic or anything you write will be set in that fics verse which feels unfair to (another/the same) recip?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-15 03:30 am (UTC)(link)1. Yes multiple times. Sometimes it’s the only fic and sometimes it’s the one that’s regularly heralded in namespace as “THE” fic for the small or medium fandom in rec threads, primers, or in bookmark comments. Usually its at least 5k+, typically over 10k.
2. I’m one and done because...
3. ...usually it was my one idea aka it was the one prompt I’ve ever seen that worked for me. Unless someone new shows up or the fandom refreshes their prompts, I have no inspiration to write more no matter how many praising comments I get. Right now I feel bad because I wrote someone “the” fic for 5+ year old fandom that never had any fic and they keep asking for it. I hope they aren’t trying to entice me to treat for them because none of their other prompts inspire me, but I have guilt since no one else has ever written the fandom before or since. There is some pressure to write in these fandoms again because you’re the only one writing for it in general or and writing it “better” than the rest.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-15 05:09 am (UTC)(link)I think a lot of Yuletiders have this experience since most fandoms are tiny and most recips request multiple years. I just want to know if my “I only have one fic in me” style is common or if anyone has tips on how to get over the hangups I have. It would be are to have THE MCU or Supernatural fic, but I don’t think it’s bragging to have THE fic in a tiny fandom.
Re: Writing THE fic in a fandom
(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 04:48 am (UTC)(link)I'm one and done in most of my fandoms, particularly for longfic. I can write several short ones sometimes. But that's rare.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-15 07:11 am (UTC)(link)2. One and done!
3. No, I like to write for new fandoms every Yuletide. One night stands are fun!
Re: Writing THE fic in a fandom
(Anonymous) 2020-10-15 11:32 am (UTC)(link)2. In the case of the popular fic: yes, I kept writing in the fandom for a while, and did pretty well, including in Yuletide. (I no longer write this fandom as canon closed in a way I wasn't happy with.)
3. I don't particularly think about new fic measuring up or whatever. What I offer/treat has a lot more to do with (1) whether I really love the canon and will enjoy extensive canon-review and mentally spending time in the canon world to write, (2) whether I love the potential recip's prompts (which is independent of whether I've written for them before), and (3) in the case of potential treats, whether I manage to find the time to treat.
Whether fics take off is all down to luck and The Claw. It's not something I can control, so I don't worry about it when offering or writing. Besides, even if the broader fandom doesn't enjoy my new fic as much, there's every chance that the person I specifically tailored it to will enjoy it even more.
One of my most-frequently-recc'd fics is one that was an incredibly obscure crossover between two fandoms that my recip might be the only person to ever have consumed both of. They loved it. They rec it often. It has under 10 kudos, has probably never been rec'd by anyone but my recip, and was it worth it? Hell yes. They obviously adored it, and that's the thing I care about. I'd rather focus on making my recip's day (or week or year) than worry about what the broader fandom(s) want.
Re: Writing THE fic in a fandom
(Anonymous) 2020-10-15 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)I have and would write in that fandom again, but that first fic was a fluke of Yuletide marching which gave me the perfect recipient with the perfect requests when I had the time to write something high-effort, so I doubt I’ll be able to replicate that anytime soon.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-15 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)2. I'd write for it again, but it's such a contained canon I don't have any ideas at present. Maybe if it were requested in Yuletide again.
3. See 2. The fic came from the one request, but they haven't requested it since.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 01:22 am (UTC)(link)2. Not one and done but I haven't written in the fandom in, gosh, 10 years. I guess you could say I moved on.
3. I couldn't write it anymore because I haven't kept up with canon.
Re: Writing THE fic in a fandom
(Anonymous) 2020-10-25 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)2. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I'm more likely to be one-and-done since I have multiple fandoms I feel like writing it, but I don't have a "never again" policy.
3. Depends on the request. There are some fics I've written where I feel I've said everything I want to say about that fandom. OTOH, there are a few fandoms that I've written for again and again, often for the same person. If the request gives me ideas, sure, why not?
