But you could get matched to anybody who'd only requested one of the two characters you offered, so it would be the same difference, wouldn't it? Would you be pissed in that scenario?

I mean I could see if I talked about 8 of 10 characters and the two I skipped were the two you'd offered, but there's always the chance of only having one of your two character offers requested.

Okay, OP, kinda sounds like you asked the question just so you could tell people who were annoyed that they are wrong.

Not at all! I'm genuinely curious why there'd be a difference, and was mostly wondering if the nonny understood that was a thing that happened. You can offer two characters all day long and still get matched with someone who wants a story about just one of them. So in the end, same difference.

Yeah but that (hypothetical) person specifically requested that one particular character. So I offer two characters in the hope of getting to write ship fic, match on someone requesting one of the characters ... sure, that happens, and I may not be thrilled but that's not the recip's fault.

But what you are describing is basically an abuse of "any". If you want specific characters, request those. What it sounds like you are thinking about is a loophole to request more than 4 characters. If you request "any" you should mean "any", not "10 characters from the tagset but not the remaining two."

I'd be genuinely happy to get a story about any character or combination save one single character out of well over a dozen in the tagset, and really hoped it wouldn't be a big deal because everyone has to offer two anyway. I'm not trying to find a loophole to request 5 or more characters in the same story.

I'm surprised it bothers people so much, but that's what I wanted to know, so I do appreciate the replies. I'll either pick Any, prompt for everybody (or nobody) and hope for the best, or I'll pick a couple characters to request and leave it at that.

No. Because no one *has* to request the characters I offer. But deliberately leaving out the character I love, and only them, feels more pointed. Requesting just one character? Ask for what you want with my blessing. Request ANY and single just one out to reject? Yup, I'm pissed. Not enough to not still do my best, but you did ask, coalie.
