Anyone I hated enough to insta-default I would instead wait to be auto-defaulted at the deadline.

I wouldn’t want them to have a good chance at getting a gift they liked, so I’d want the PHer to have the least amount of time to make something. If it was someone I really couldn’t stand (ars_belli, Unthesirus, heeroluva, someone OTT homophobic or racist/etc) I’d probably repurpose a 1k WIP so the mods wouldn’t catch me and then last minute delete it with an email to the mods on 12/24 like “I hit a DNW bad without realizing. Please get them a PH and I’m so sorry.” Then I’d do an NYR if I didn’t already have treats written and posted for someone else.

I mean, I'm also someone who will default last-minute at the works deadline to minimize the risk of going without a gift, but that's a level of spite I side-eye.

*shrugs* What can I say, I just don’t like people that go out of their way to self-expose themselves as nazis, racists, or homophobes to have a good time. Just how I was raised.

You had my sword until you said you would upload and later pull a fake WIP. I guess I was raised to side-eye deliberate deception and liars, if you want to pull the "it's about ethical standards" card.

So you'd make extra work for the mods and delay reveals? Just write them 1000 words of blah and orphan it.

Honestly, I kind of admire this level of diabolical. That said, I think lol_meme's spitefic for ars_nazi was the best way to handle her.

I also thought that fic was a great way to deal with her. But I still think what AYRT is not at all the same and super shitty.

NA

I think it'd be hilarious.

Yes, setting an emergency pinch hitter up to write fic for a wanker on Christmas Eve is really hilarious. It's downright heroic. You owned the wanker, yay!

No, it was passive aggresshole bullshit.

Some people write really good PHs on an amazingly short turnaround, though. If you're that committed to making sure your terrible recip receives the terrible gift they deserve, you should just step up and write it yourself. The elaborate scenario you've concocted is more work for the mods, could hold up reveals for everyone, and still doesn't guarantee a bad gift for your recip.

I agree.

...The mods that handhold these people year after year knowing the type of participants they are? Out of all the exchanges for someone fed up with genuine bad faith participants to not care if they inconvenience the mods, Yuletide is pretty up there on that front.

It inconveniences the pinch hitter, too. If you think the mods deserve it for “handholding” people who are widely disliked but who haven’t broken any rules by, you know, doing the job of any mod, maybe have some sympathy for the person who pulls a story out of nowhere so the archive can open.

by, you know, doing the job of any mod

Mods should ban these people, not coddle them. Or just write them fic if they refuse to ban.

I love all this shade considering the mods talked to ars_belli and they didn’t sign up this year.

They talked to her? I heard they never disciplined her whatsoever.
