Gifting someone a work that includes their DNWs and #/? fic are both against YT rules, so why isn’t the work in NYR grounds to toss him?

(In all seriousness, I believe YT authors are banned only if the actual recipient complains directly to the mods. There was A LOT of discussion when he wrote the dinosaur baby one, as well as the dewclaws, but maybe neither of those recips took it to the level of an actual direct mod complaint.)

It's against the rules for the regular Yuletide collection or to qualify for a NYR to make you eligible to sign up after a banning. But if you're not trying to get unbanned, the story just has to be "of any length and for any past Yuletide prompt" -- the NYR profile doesn't even say you have to avoid the recip's DNWs if you're not doing it to get unbanned.

I dunno if it's the kind of situation a rule should cover or if it's just "Don't be a jerk" territory. It's supposed to be a gift.

Coalie from further above: I went digging, expecting that the Madness rules would say you can't write DNWs, but they actually do not! The 2018 Madness profile links to the DW comm's post about posting, which just says "each work must be a gift for a specific person (or people) and you must have reason to believe it would be an appropriate gift for that person." under Yuletide Madness. Nothing about DNWs. They're only mentioned in the guidelines for posting treats in the main collection.

I honestly don't see how that "you must have reason to believe it would be an appropriate gift" part doesn't cover DNWs.

It sort of makes sense. It isn't covered by the whole exchange thing where you sign up and write something in exchange for getting something. It's just a gift written for you, if you strip out the whole "make up for past misbehaviour" aspect of it. In that case, you can really just refuse it if you don't like it, just like you would if it was gifted to you outside of a collection.

Does it include their DNWs though? They say no extreme gore, but asked for a zombie AU. How gory is it?

My read is that it includes multiple of the recip's DNWs. The exact number getting hit is up for debate, but seriously, just the tags already hit some of them.

Death of requested characters: The story opens in a frame story where the requested characters have been dead for centuries, although YMMV on whether that counts. That being said, the story is tagged MCD. It's only at 5/20, so we don't know yet if one of the two requested characters will bite it on-screen.

Animal harm: I'm not honestly sure how great a DNW this was to include without explanation when asking for a zombie dinosaur AU in Jurassic Park. However, the work also includes harm to non-dinosaur animal zombies. (It would bother me, personally, as someone else who DNWs animal harm. I'm fine seeing a zombie dino get toasted with a flamethrower, but would prefer not to see my fave spear a zombie dog. I know that's inconsistent of me.)

Focus on bodily fluids: "Open wounds and a few exposed ribs showed against darker skin streaked with caked blood, lymph, and that still-unidentified inky black goo."... Yeah, I think it fails this one.

Unrequested ships: The work is tagged with two CC/OC ships which the recip did not request.

Gore and violence: I mean, go read and judge for yourself? I would personally consider it pretty gory, and it's tagged with Graphic Depictions of Violence.

From the 2017 request: General Do Not Wants: graphic rape, underage sex, incest, child abuse, killing my requested characters, extreme violence or gore, focus on body fluids, depictions of animal harm, cheating, PWP, unrequested crossovers, unrequested ships. They wanted a shippy story about Alan and Ellie, and had prompted for zombie AU (zombie people, we must assume) or a story where the dinopocalypse turned into a dinotopia. You're giving extreme violence and death. Why would you write a story tagged this way for this recipient? Because you wanted to write it and you figure it'll get more eyes being in the collection. They should refuse it, and you should have been banned from Yuletide years ago with your DNW dewclaws and homophobia.

No, I think at this point, he's like mad uncle Joe. Nobody likes to have him around when he goes on one of his rants about horticulture, or when he goes into excrutiating detail about his bowel movements and how they were never the same after his alien abduction, but he's a member of the family.

I'd be kind of bummed if he were banned because his antics amuse me. But I feel sorry for his recips who aren't happy with his fic.

I wish he could be assigned to me. Nothing he's into squicks me, and as much as I'd love genuinely good fic about my small fandoms, I'd also enjoy the novelty of his weird-ass headcanon take on any of them.

then you should tell the mods that so they can assign him to you and save other people the grief of having to deal with him.

I do think the mods could and probably should ban him for his insistence on giving people things they actively don't want, over and over, and I really wish the person currently being victimized by the dinosaur zombie apocalypse would complain to them. But being homophobic isn't against Yuletide rules, and they could never enforce a ban on being a bigot, or even against bigoted language in Yuletide letters.
