People don’t like LJ because the Russian government owns it and they really do have some sketchy IP logging. While it isn’t a huge deal for an American, if you’re someone in Russia or the Ukraine checking out a LGBT friendly letter, there isn’t a nonzero chance that you may have that impact you later. Since we don’t know who is or isn’t in Russia, it’s sort of a thing for some people to use DW and not LJ to not put those people in that situation.

I mean, like, sure, although people are also still on facebook to organize their left-wing political activism, despite being aware of the political contradictions. Not saying it doesn't matter, or that there aren't better solutions.

LJ isn't owned by the Russian government. The company that owns it is Russian, but it's not a state company.

The company that owns it is either a front for the Kremlin or gives their data to the Kremlin.

Okay, yeah, makes sense. I knew of course that it's owned by a Russian company but I suppose I hadn't considered all the implications.

I am not sure it makes sense to move my letter for the current YT at this point since it's linked in the app and all, but I'll keep this in mind for future exchanges and start posting letters on DW.

I just spent a good thirty minutes trying to fix the formatting mess that resulted from pasting my letter over to a DW with no success (no idea what's going on, it's like because I pasted exactly one thing from an old tumblr letter, the whole thing is confused even in text view) so I guess people will just have to side-eye me because I'm not wading through a giant wall of html to try to fix it by the deadline.

Coalie, I copied the html from LJ and pasted into the html box from DW. It worked okay. Just a couple spots of cleanup.

I only used LJ initially because it looks better without thinking about any of the political stuff, but I went ahead and edited my letter and changed the links in various places. No biggee.

Well, it didn't work okay for me. I've been using DW for comm purposes for years and never had this many issues, it's definitely a weird thing.

+1 It took me nearly an hour to get my letter formatted properly after copy-pasting from LJ to DW.
