Long letters in general. Anything more than three or four sentences of general ramblings about a fandom. Just give me a list of likes and DNWs and maybe some prompts, please. IDGAF about the rest.

The thing is, you'd expect most people who'd bother with _coal would also pay attention to the FFA's exchange thread, and exchange thread is one of the most batshit. Particularly recently - and no, it's not just exchange troll/that one grudgewanker.

I'm the exact opposite of many nonnies: I want MORE. MORE, MORE, MORE. I love "bad" prompts that are an entire fic outline.

Are you going to give deets or is this seventieth verse, same as the first of vague griping about the ToT mod that never goes anywhere? I'd rather have There's a Stick Up Morbane's Ass wank.

How is griping supposed to "go somewhere"? The ToT mod is a lot less cheerful and chatty to interact with than Morbane. This is hardly news. If you want "deets", just look at the comm and compare their answers to random people's questions.

That's a fair point, but the differences in mod response are telling. Obviously there are some totally bullshit/trolly/oversensitive modcalls that get ignored, but when you see, for example, that a mildly eye-rolly comment about ace headcanons will get frozen much faster than a racist thread, you can't help but draw certain conclusions about priorities over there.

It doesn't help, but the neuroticism levels of the thread are off the charts and it'd be wanky without any trolling.

It reminds me a lot of places like Ask a Manager or Captain Awkward. FFA makes fun of those places but has a lot of the same tendencies.

I sometimes think Cult of Nice gets exaggerated

dc - Yeah, there are people who think "Cult of Nice" means "nice in general." It doesn't. It's asshole behavior behind a smarmy(*) faux-nice façade.

(*) not "smarmy" as in "no homo but let's cuddle naked," but as in "unctious and fake"

Ah right, RPF fandoms must have characters. So maybe a better example would be someone nominates the Thrawn series from the Star Wars novels and says in their optional details that they'd be interested in another adventure where Luke and Mara Jade encounter Thrawn, and they receive that.

The main point is that you can request whatever you want in optional details. You can write whatever you want unless it violates a DNW. Ineligible characters only mean you can't match on them, not that you can't write about them for Yuletide.

Add them if you like gen, leave them out if you don’t.

If all gen is the same to you then ODAO is the defacto gen out if your author won’t write any of your prompts. I don’t see why people uninterested in stuff they don’t want (which could be canon based fic for people that only want AUs or any other thing) should have to put in a prompt to make their author feel better when it isn’t like the author is willing to write 1k of what was asked for just to make the recip feel good.

Admittedly I'm mostly going off one thing - if you check the comments of the gay bashing dragon fic, you'll find a comment from someone called wendums. Among other things, she says "I do love all your Pern stories". Now, the anon account the GBD fic is currently on didn't post any other Pern stories... So can it be that wendums is referring to the GBD author's original identity? :O

Still not enough? The mystery author of GBD was male according to the Watson sisters. I know most people think they wrote the story themselves and were lying about it, but that only makes sense if they were planning to orphan it from the start, otherwise all that wanking in the comments would have looked mighty strange after the deanoning.

Still not convinced?... Ok well fine, it's a conspiracy theory, not gospel truth. But it fits pretty nicely with heeroluva's behaviour in the recent wank, doesn't it? *tinfoil hat intensifies*

You shouldn't include a gen out if you don't care about that prompt and wouldn't actually enjoy a gen fic with that scenario, but you're putting it in there anyway because you feel like you ought to. (I will always think you're setting yourself up for unnecessary potential disappointment, if you have your heart absolutely SET on shipfic but are signing up for an exchange that explicitly doesn't guarantee it to you. But that's a different issue.)

If, however, what "gen out" means to you is "a prompt about these characters and their relationship that is & rather than / solely in case my writer doesn't ship it, but would in fact bring me equal or only marginally less enjoyment to receive than any of my shipfic prompts", then I think that's fine and a reasonable thing to do, to increase the odds that if you do get gen, it's gen you want and will like.

I initially assumed your pitch was a joke in the top level thread rather than a serious theory. But this is convincing, nonny. Pass me the tinfoil.
