Uh, no. Non-white people living in their own countries aren't POC, POC specifically refers to non-white people living in the US where they are minorities and oppressed.

Japanese people living in Japan are not POC. Eastern European people living in France are not POC (despite being oppressed there!). Etc. That word is US-specific and doesn't apply or really function anywhere else.

You're just trying to cover your own ignorance with fake outrage because you forgot that places like Italy, Spain and France exist and got hit way before you.

People of colour is a generalised description used to refer to anyone not white, it has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not that specific group is the majority or minority in an individual country. It was created to give a simple universal way of talking about the nonwhite worldwide community as a whole without refering to specific individual groups or minorities. So yes Japanese people living in Japan are POC.

The last time we talked about the definition of POC was when I brought up the wanker who kept yelling at everyone on twitter because they thought we were all racist for not having any "POC" ships. When we pointed out that they were yelling at an anime fandom, where literally every character was Japanese, they claimed that didn't count because the japanese are not oppressed in japan, the creator of the canon was not oppressed, and the charaters were not oppressed. Kpop and Bollywood movies didn't count either.

And YOU people overwhelmingly agreed when I brought it up here, explaining in loooong detail that non-white characters in a non-oppressive context by a non-oppressed creator made for a non-oppressed audience didn't count as POC. Or maybe it was FFA? Idk, I walked away after because you guys are crazy. Anyway, you guys insisted that japanese people in japan don't count and that it was an US-specific term that should never have been used internationally at all.

So no, you don't get to turn around and pretend it's not an US term now. Latinx people in Latin America are not POC while they stay in their own countries. Just like the japanese, they become POC the moment they cross the US border.

AYRT, I don't know who you people are, or who you're refering to. Anyone who told you that Japanese people are not POC wete wrong, and people who claim that have been repeatedly mocked for their idiocy on FFA, so it sure as shit wasn't there or here that you heard it. Take a look at any of the fandom challenges designed to focus on getting more representation for POC characters from Dark Agenda to kaleidoscope and all the others and you'll see that the general belief in fandom is that POC refers to amyone not white. If you want a Yuletide specific example just look at the rules for the subchallenge focusing on POC from every year, hint, Japamese people in Japan absolutely count.

Latino isn’t a race. An Asian Latino person is Asian in Colombia and in the US. A white Latino person is white in both places.

And while the wanker was misguided, I agree the dynamics in “diverse” shipping is different when you’re talking about in-country, in-majority fandom and elsewhere. It’s hard to talk about without getting into Eat Your Vegetables territory, but part of it is engaging with characters and canons outside of your own demographic.

Normal people have been reading/watching canons from around the world since forever, it's americans who seem to not care about anyplace else.

Everyone NOT american went ??? because we've been watching japanese dramas practically since the internet got fast enough to make downloading dramas practical. Not to mention, at the time they were talking about, my local netflix had at least three shows with japanese actresses in the lead. Then it turned out they meant the first show produced in america, by and for americans, with an american actress of japanese descend in the lead. Uh, yeah, maybe be a bit more clear next time. Japan is a place that exists. There are plenty of japanese shows with women in the lead.

It's kind of hilarious how you think I need to "engage with characters and canons outside my own demographic" when I've been watching/reading plenty of canons from japan, korea, china, india, have read translated books from every continent and probably over a hundred countries, starting with fairy tales from the middle east as a kid... and yet none of that counts because I don't ship Finn from Star Wars.

What you really mean is that everyone, everywhere, should engage with black americans, because that's the only diversity you care about.

No, actually, to quote Wikipedia:

"The term "person of color" (plural: people of color, persons of color; sometimes abbreviated POC)[1] is today primarily used to describe any person who is not considered white in the United States. [...] The term emphasizes common experiences of systemic racism."

The common experience of discrimination against non-white people part is really important, and it's also why it doesn't apply world-wide. A Japanese person in Japan does not have the same experience of being in a minority as a Japanese person in the US does.

You're quoting wikipedia rather than looking at how the word is used. Look at any anti-racism activist organisation, and you'll see in about 10 seconds of reading that the term is not only used for minority groups in the US, and the US specific use has long since evolved into a general term for all People of Colour. I mean the dictionary definition says the term originated in tbe 18th century to refer to anyone who was not white, it fell out of use and was then revived in the 1990s and has since become more widespread. Ofcourse if you were actually keeping up with activist groups and current preferred terminology, you'd know the that big debate of the momemt is whether or not to switch from POC to BIPoC. There's a certain amount of controversy surronding that one, as it was originally coined to be used in cases where Black and Indigenous PoC had common ground and were targeted in a specific way by racism, then very swiftly began to be ised in some circles as a replacement for POC. POC itself has not been without controversy, as some people who fall under that ymbrella feel that it flattens or homogenises the experiences of people who face racism in different ways, and prefer to use specific identifiers.

Uhm, I don't know how to say this, but Black folks in the USA *are* living in their own country, just as much as white people. Neither of them are indigenous to the USA, but the insinuation that POC in the USA aren't living in their own country while white people are is basically the foundation of systemic racism in the USA so you are not being woke here, just showing your ass.

Meanwhile, indigenous people are more than anyone living in their own country but they are still in the minority and oppressed because, well, genocide.
